Dear WAMAL Supporters,
Warm greetings and happy holidays! During this festive season, we want to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude for your unwavering support and dedication to our cause. Your commitment to the well-being of our rescued Malamutes has made a significant impact, and we are truly thankful for each and every one of you.
If you're feeling the holiday spirit and are looking for a special way to spread joy to our furry friends, we have two online wish lists where you can find items that would make a world of difference for the dogs at Malley Valley:
These wish lists contain a variety of items that our Malamutes could use, from supplies to enrichment items to tasty treats. Your generous contributions will not only bring joy to our dogs but also contribute to their well-being during the holiday season and beyond. Your support, whether big or small, makes a significant impact on the lives of these wonderful dogs!
Once again, thank you for being a crucial part of the WAMAL family. We wish you and your loved ones a joyful holiday season filled with love, laughter, and the warmth that comes from making a difference in the lives of others.

URGENT: SHORT-TERM QUARANTINE FOSTERS NEEDED
|
|
|
If you've been following the news recently, you've probably seen reports about the atypical Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease (aCIRD) that has been observed in a number of states including Washington and Oregon. At this time little is known for certain, but as cases reportedly do not respond well to typical treatments and in a minority of cases can lead to severe, even fatal pneumonia, WAMAL is carefully following emerging news and research into the reported cases. We have been in communication with other shelter and rescue operations as well as area veterinarians, upon whose advice we are now implementing precautionary measures to protect our dogs. As more solid information surfaces, these protocols will be adapted accordingly.
We must be especially cautious not to inadvertently introduce this disease into our kennel environment. Our highest-risk exposure scenario is intake - particularly intake of a dog coming from a crowded shelter environment - yet dogs in that situation are also often in the greatest need of our help. Therefore, we urgently seek to enlist a few short-term "Quarantine Fosters" who can host an incoming dog for a minimum of 2 weeks upon intake. In brief, Quarantine Fosters should have no resident dogs and must keep the foster dog socially distanced (at least 15 ft) from other dogs during that timeframe. Assuming the quarantine period passes with no onset of illness, the dog can then more safely proceed either to Malley Valley, or to a long-term foster or an adopter. Please read more about the requirements of Quarantine Fostering HERE.
Without securing quarantine fosters, WAMAL may face no-win situations where we must choose between putting our own dogs at increased risk, or turning down dogs who desperately need our assistance. Can you help?
We recognize that the majority of our audience is here because you are already owned by a malamute, and therefore can't help in this capacity. But perhaps you know of someone who fits the bill and could host a dog for a few weeks at a time. If so, please help us out by recruiting them! Please ask anyone who is interested to contact fosters@wamal.com for more information. Thank you!

What an incredible experience we had on October 27th and 28th! Alumni from WAMAL, the Alaskan Malamute Rescue of Alaska and Chesapeake Area Alaskan Malamute Protection (CHAAMP) proudly represented the Pacific Northwest at the Alaskan Malamute Club of America’s National Specialty Show in Albany, Oregon.
Amidst a sea of stunning Mals, our rescued dogs were featured in the Alaskan Malamute Assistance League (AMAL) Rescue Showcase. This special event celebrated adopters and their furry companions, inviting them to join the show with an introductory reception. The following day, each adopter and pup took center stage in the show ring, accompanied by the reading of their heartwarming rescue story.
It was an emotionally charged moment that left us with a lump in our throats – one of those "you're crying, I'm not crying" proud moments. Witnessing the incredible transformation of these Malamutes into beloved and cherished family members was truly touching. 🐾💕
Thank you and congratulations to our following honorees:
- Deirdre & William Russell with Silver
- Brian Brunner with Echo
- Seema & Vijesh Shetty with Nuka
- Bob Sutherland & Nicole McCullough with Oreo

CHRISTENSON AWARD PRESENTED TO LONG TIME WAMAL VOLUNTEER
|
|
|
We are thrilled to share a heartwarming highlight from the recent AMAL Rescue Showcase in Albany, Oregon, where our dedicated volunteer, Rickie Anderson, was bestowed with the prestigious Christenson Award. This esteemed recognition, presented by the Alaskan Malamute Assistance League (AMAL), is a tribute to the unsung heroes among us who tirelessly contribute to our mission.
The Christenson Award, established in memory of Chris Christenson, honors individuals who work diligently behind the scenes, embodying the spirit of selflessness and dedication. Chris, remembered as the calming presence beside Betty Christenson, tragically passed away while exercising dogs, never letting go of the leash. This award serves to acknowledge those, like Chris, who may not seek the limelight but play a pivotal role in our collective efforts to save the dogs we hold dear.

Our recipient, Rickie Anderson, is a powerhouse of commitment, having devoted countless hours and efforts as a fundraiser, PR person, event coordinator, and creative extraordinaire. Through her exceptional work, WAMAL has achieved remarkable milestones:
- Received substantial donations for the expansion of our "Malley Valley" kennels.
- Secured funding and sponsorships for crucial dog surgeries.
- Launched the engaging "Mally Muse" newsletter, spotlighting adoptable dogs and current events.
- Successfully organized the annual "Loot4Moots" auction, attracting a growing participation.
- Initiated and expanded various fundraisers, including Poorly Drawn Pets, the Calendar Contest, and Hike with a Mal.
- Attracted new volunteers to support WAMAL and raised awareness of our mission.
|
|
|
Rickie, a former President of WAMAL, alongside her husband Brad, has generously contributed time and handyman skills to enhance Malley Valley. While she contemplates a step back from her extensive fundraising and event coordination activities, Rickie remains involved in smaller programs to help promote our mission of rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming Malamutes in need.
Let us join together in expressing our heartfelt congratulations to Rickie Anderson for this well-deserved recognition. Her unwavering dedication truly embodies the essence of the Christenson Award and inspires us all to continue our mission of making a difference in the lives of Malamutes.

Attention please everyone: There's a new doggo making her debut on Santa's "Nice List" this year - and it's me, Misty!
I was a shelter dog who came to WAMAL as a rather mouthy youngster, but with the help of the nice people at Malley Valley, I have been working very hard - and succeeding! - to get on the Nice List, in the hopes that Santa will grant my Christmas wish: a home and family of my very own.
I am a high-energy young girl with an intelligent, busy mind that needs to be kept occupied. So I'm wishing for an active family who will give me lots of exercise - both mental and physical. I'd love to go hiking with you, or work on training new skills. If you're up for it, I'd make a most excellent running partner! I'm probably still a bit too much to be around younger children, but I'd really benefit from another similarly high-energy dog friend that could romp around with me!
Could you be the family to make my Christmas wish come true? If so, please apply to adopt me or foster me today!

Hi everyone - do you prefer your dogs with ears up, or down? Either way I've got you covered!
My name is Phoenix, and as you can see I'm quite striking with my ginger fur and unique ear styling. But I'm much more than just a handsome face - I'm a playful, silly boy who just LOVES attention, snuggles, and treats! I'll do all kinds of tricks for treats!
That said, I don't like sharing those treats - or my people - with other dogs, so I am back at WAMAL looking for a furever home where I can be your one-and-only.
I don't like being crated, and I do have some escapist tendencies, but I can behave in the house as long as you don't leave temptations lying around. I'm a strong puller - Santa's reindeer have nothing on me! But since I'm fond of treats, that will help you work with me on leash manners and anything else you want me to learn!
I'd love nothing more than a home of my own this Christmas. Won't you consider applying to adopt me or foster me?
