Barkdust Provides Curb Appeal

Spring is the perfect time to give your landscape a noticeable refresh—and one of the most effective ways to do that is with a fresh application of barkdust.

We recommend replenishing barkdust in shrub beds every two years, ideally in the spring after winter pruning and pre-emergent applications are complete. This service is typically included as part of our budget proposal and should be considered an important landscape enhancement. Simply put, there’s nothing that improves the appearance of a landscape more quickly than a clean, fresh layer of barkdust.

Beyond aesthetics, maintaining a proper mulch layer provides several key benefits:

• Reduces soil erosion, especially on slopes—critical during our rainy winter months.

• Improves soil moisture retention, helping reduce irrigation needs during dry summers.

• Suppresses weeds—fresh barkdust is weed-free and acts as a natural barrier, while also improving the effectiveness of chemical pre-emergent applications. Weeds are much harder to control on bare soil or decomposed bark.

Our preferred material is fresh-ground fir mulch, as it stays looking clean and attractive longer. While some clients prefer the darker look of composted bark, we generally discourage it—it’s more expensive and breaks down more quickly since it’s already partially decomposed. That said, we’re happy to install either option based on your preference.

If you have questions or would like to schedule this enhancement, we’re always happy to help.
