Barkley's Vision:

Every child is a reader, and every child is a book owner.

Barkley's Mission:

Enriching children's love of reading by providing books that they can call their own.

Thoughts from the Bookshelf:

Hello, friends of Barkley’s Bookshelf! We are happy to report that 2025 was a resounding success in championing children’s literacy in our community. Our successes are because of the wonderful support we receive from all of our stakeholders: volunteers, community partners, and donors.

Let me share some of the amazing accomplishments:

·     6,613 students were impacted by participating in our book distributions, which is double the number from the previous year.

·     Four additional Title 1 schools were added to our list of partners, enabling us to serve five Title 1 schools in total by donating over 4,600 new books.

·     Our first Barkley's Bookshelf reading nook was installed at the PTSD Foundation of America – Camp Hope, providing veterans with sweet moments of reading and connecting with their visiting children.

These are a few examples of the work that was completed, and more illustrations of our impact can be found in this issue of the newsletter.

Our team is excited for the new year and is working hard to prepare for the upcoming activities that will spread book joy! Please take a minute to read our stories of hope and wonder, and learn how you too can help build reading communities in NW Houston, bringing us closer to our Vision: Every child is a reader, and every child is a book owner.

Reading is Believing Campaign Fulfilled!

We are grateful for the donors that contributed to our goal of raising $12,000! These funds will go towards Title 1 School Book Fairs and we are very excited since we have returning schools as well as new for 2026. Thank you for Believing in Reading!

"Because of the wide selection of new books provided through the Barkley's Bookshelf Book Fair, our students felt like their reading interests and lives have value, and their identity as a reader grows stronger."

Catholic Charities Grant

We're thrilled to be a first-time recipient of the Annual Children's Charities Grant from the Charity Guild of Catholic Women! This grant makes Barkley's Bookshelf Book Fairs possible for three Title I schools, where kids can pick out a brand-new book, supporting literacy and promoting the joy of reading. Thank you for your support!

If you are in the Houston area, check out the Charity Guild Shop at 1203 Lovett. Proceeds from this shop help make these grants possible.

Book Delivery Models - Meeting Readers Wherever They Are

Community Partner Book Fairs

Our original delivery method involves partnering with Cy-Fair Helping Hands, Boys and Girls Country and Cy-Hope centers to host seasonal book fairs. At these events, children receive a bookmark and a tote bag to collect five books of their choice for their personal libraries.

2025 Impact:

4336 Books / 864 Students

Book Bundles

Book Bundles bring the joy of reading directly to families when on-site book fairs aren’t possible. We team up with community partners to handpick engaging, grade-level books that ignite curiosity and excitement in young readers. By delivering these customized bundles, we help turn everyday moments into opportunities for discovery and bonding—offering a welcome escape that relieves stress for both parents and children.

2025 Impact:

1455 Books / 806 Students

Summer Reading Program

Barkley's Bookshelf works closely with community partners, Cy-Fair Helping Hands and Cy-Hope, to support summer literacy. Students and their parents then select their top five choices, and Barkley's Bookshelf ensures the selected books are mailed directly to their summer address, bridging the gap between school and home reading.

2025 Impact:

431 Books / 89 Students

Title 1 School Book Fairs

Through Title I Schools in Cy-Fair ISD, we work with librarians to order approved books so every student receives a book to keep. Extra books are included so all students have a variety to choose from, and any remaining books are donated to the school for distribution as needed.

2025 Impact:

4671 Books / 4671 Students

'Barkley's Bookshelf'

Barkley's Bookshelf is a recently piloted model with the residents of the PTSD Foundation of America-Camp Hope. When their children visit, they can select books from an actual 'Barkley's Bookshelf' to take home. Some residents have also chosen to mail books to family members or to read them together via Zoom, adding a new dimension to the benefits of book ownership.

2025 Impact:

183 Books / 60 Students

Barkley's Fun Facts:

In 2025, 91% of all books distributed were new.

In 2025, Amazon and Virtual Book Drives accounted for 929 books.

In 2026, the Summer Reading Program will increase by 50%.

In 2026, we added three new Title I schools, bringing the total to 8.
