Spring book distributions have ended, and what a whirlwind of book joy it was! Barkley’s Bookshelf was excited to distribute 5,000+ new books through our school book fairs, book bundles, and reading nook delivery models. We hosted book fairs in Cy-Fair ISD at Owens, Lieder, Sheridan, Gleason, and Hairgrove Elementary Schools. Book bundles were delivered to Rosehill Elementary (Tomball ISD), Gracewood, and the Little Free Library. Our reading nook at Camp Hope was restocked. There were lots of happy faces who were ready to read!
Delivering books to young readers, where they are, means that 5,000+ children in NW Houston now have access to reading materials outside of school. What does this mean beyond the numbers? The outcome of book access results in students:
- Experiencing book ownership
- Gaining reader identity as they begin to view themselves as readers
- Identifying their reading preference in authors and genres
- Choosing books that interest them, which leads to meaningful reading engagement
- Developing connections through reading with family members
Barkley’s Bookshelf works year-round to bring books to kids in NW Houston. If you are interested in championing children’s literacy in our community, join us! We continue to strive towards our Vision: Every child is a reader, and every child is a book owner.
