Barkley's Vision:

Every child is a reader, and every child is a book owner.

Barkley's Mission:

Enriching children's love of reading by providing books that they can call their own.

Thoughts from the Bookshelf

Spring book distributions have ended, and what a whirlwind of book joy it was! Barkley’s Bookshelf was excited to distribute 5,000+ new books through our school book fairs, book bundles, and reading nook delivery models. We hosted book fairs in Cy-Fair ISD at Owens, Lieder, Sheridan, Gleason, and Hairgrove Elementary Schools. Book bundles were delivered to Rosehill Elementary (Tomball ISD), Gracewood, and the Little Free Library. Our reading nook at Camp Hope was restocked. There were lots of happy faces who were ready to read!

Delivering books to young readers, where they are, means that 5,000+ children in NW Houston now have access to reading materials outside of school. What does this mean beyond the numbers? The outcome of book access results in students:

  • Experiencing book ownership
  • Gaining reader identity as they begin to view themselves as readers
  • Identifying their reading preference in authors and genres
  • Choosing books that interest them, which leads to meaningful reading engagement
  • Developing connections through reading with family members

Barkley’s Bookshelf works year-round to bring books to kids in NW Houston. If you are interested in championing children’s literacy in our community, join us! We continue to strive towards our Vision: Every child is a reader, and every child is a book owner.

Meeting READERS, where they are!

Rosehill Rodeo Roundup

Barkley's Bookshelf partnered with the PTO at Rosehill Elementary in Tomball ISD to support their Rodeo Roundup Carnival on April 10th. We donated 250 new books, stickers, and bookmarks to their book walk.

We are excited to welcome Rosehill Elementary as one of our school partners!

Camp Hope

Barkley’s Bookshelf has restocked the 'Barkley's Bookshelf' with books and book character plushies that provide emotional support. Reading is not only a source of comfort, but also a powerful healing agent—stories can offer hope, foster resilience, and help children and families process difficult emotions. Books have consistently proven to bridge communication between residents and their children, strengthening bonds and supporting emotional well-being.

Summer Reading

We are thrilled to launch our 2nd Summer Reading program, partnering with CyFair Helping Hands and the Hope Centers. Books will be selected by the students and then distributed to them this summer. A big thanks to the Whataburger corporate office for donating coupons for a free kids' meal to include in the Summer Reading Program totes.

Little Free Library at

Texas Roadhouse

The Little Free Library at Texas Roadhouse at HWY 290 & HWY 6, has been restocked! We appreciate our partnership with Texas Roadhouse, which allows us to continue meeting our young readers where they are.
