A Message from your County Commissioner

Dear Palm Beach County District 3 residents,

I'm pleased to share the outcomes of our recent discussions and decisions at the Board of County Commissioners meetings this past month. Your input and concerns were heard, and I'm committed to ensuring that our actions reflect the needs of our community.

I'm thrilled to announce that the board has approved funding for over 440 affordable and workforce housing units across Palm Beach County. This marks a significant step forward in our efforts to address the growing need for accessible housing in our area. Projects like the Lake Worth Beach Scattered Site Project, Calusa Pointe II and Residences at Marina Village will provide much-needed housing options for our residents, with a focus on affordability in perpetuity.

Additionally, we've taken steps to support our education system and enhance public safety. Regarding infrastructure and governance, steps were made to the Palm Beach County Procurement/Purchasing Code to streamline processes and promote accountability in our procurement practices.

Furthermore, our commitment to economic development remains strong. Through initiatives like the State Housing Initiatives Partnership (SHIP) Program, we're investing in affordable housing solutions and partnering with organizations to address housing needs in District 3.

I'm also proud to share that Palm Beach County has been awarded the prestigious 2023-24 Platinum Bell Seal for Workplace Mental Health by Mental Health America. This esteemed award recognizes our dedication to fostering mentally healthy workplaces for our employees. The recognition showcases the dedication of the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners to creating a supportive and nurturing work environment for all employees.

As we enter May, which is Mental Health Awareness Month, it's important to recognize the significance of mental health and well-being in our community. Let's continue to support one another and raise awareness about mental health issues, ensuring that those in need receive the care and support they deserve.

As always, I encourage you to stay informed and engaged in our community's progress. Your feedback is vital as we continue working together to build a brighter future for Palm Beach County.

Commissioner Barnett recently visited Extraordinary Kids Foundation Inc. and had the pleasure of meeting with CEO Madean Gilzene. It was an inspiring experience to witness firsthand the dedication of Madean and her team to providing care and services to special needs and medically complex children in our community. Thank you, Madean Gilzene, for your dedication and for the invaluable work you do every day.

Boca School for Autism

Commissioner Barnett recently visited the Boca School for Autism, a beacon of hope and support for children with learning and behavioral differences in our community. Under the leadership of CEO Diana Sierra, this institution distinguishes itself by offering small classes and personalized education tailored to each child's unique needs. Thank you, Diana Sierra!

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Recruit Graduating Class 90

Commissioner Barnett had the privilege of attending the graduation ceremony of Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Recruit Class 90 at the South County Civic Center. Witnessing the 31 recruits transition into 31 Probationary Firefighters.

Congratulations to the new firefighters and best wishes as you embark on your journey to serving our county.

Lake Worth Beach E Street Cottage Homes Ribbon-Cutting

On April 24, a ceremonial ribbon-cutting was held for the new homes that are part of the Lake Worth Beach E Street Community Land Trust (CLT) Cottage Homes Project. CLT of Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast was formed in 2006 to help address the need for affordable housing in Palm Beach County. The partners for the E Street project include Palm Beach County, South Florida Community Land Trust, JP Morgan Chase & Co., Lake Worth Beach CRA, Zabik and Associates Inc., Stuart & Shelby and SELF (Creating Sustainable Communities).

Taco Fiesta Contest in Palm Springs

Commissioner Barnett and Village of Palm Springs Mayor Bev Smith recently teamed up for a fun-filled Taco Fiesta judging contest. With various tantalizing tacos to taste, it was a tough job, but someone had to do it. The shrimp taco fusion stole the spotlight with its irresistible flavors, earning a solid 9/10 rating from Commissioner Barnett. Thank you to all participants for showcasing Palm Beach County's culinary excellence.

Palm Springs Community Middle School Stingrays Undefeated

Commissioner Barnett was honored to conduct the ceremonial toss-up at the Palm Springs Community Middle School boys' basketball game. The Stingrays showed incredible dedication and skill throughout the season, making it to the county championship game. Although they fell short by just one point in overtime, their undefeated season and determination are something to be immensely proud of. Huge congratulations to our fired-up players and cheerleaders for their outstanding performance. You've all made Palm Springs proud.

Geniusville Academy

The bright minds of the Geniusville Academy kids from Mangonia Park visited the Government Center last month. Commissioner Barnett led a tour showcasing where all the action unfolds in county government. The students had a behind-the-scenes sneak peek from the McEaddy Conference Room to the Jane M. Thompson Memorial Chambers, where decisions are made. “It's inspiring to see young talents eager to learn about the inner workings of local governance, and we hope this experience sparks a passion for civic engagement and leadership in their futures,” said Commissioner Barnett.

Hispanic Multicultural Resource Community Center

Commissioner Barnett is working hard to secure funding for the Hispanic Multicultural Resource Community Center. He understands the importance of such a center in supporting and celebrating our vibrant Hispanic community. By advocating for resources to make this project happen, he's showing his dedication to creating a more inclusive and supportive Palm Beach County. Let's keep pushing for initiatives that promote understanding and unity in our diverse community!

Coffee with Mike

Commissioner Barnett hosts ''Coffee with Mike" visits at various locations within District 3. This month, he was welcomed to The Mid-County Senior Center, The Village of Palm Springs Travel Club and El Bodegon Supermarket.

The Village of Palm Springs Travel Club

The Village of Palm Springs Travel Club welcomed Commissioner Barnett to speak about issues he is working to resolve in the district. Serious concerns were raised about the traffic congestion that occurs in front of Palm Springs Middle School, Davis Road and Dolan Road.

Commissioner Barnett invited all interested parties to meet at Palm Springs Middle School to view and observe the traffic that happens in the afternoon to incite feedback from our Palm Beach County Engineering and Public Works Department and found that change is possible. He has called a meeting to determine options for Davis Road and Dolan Road.

Supermercados El Bodegon

Commissioner Barnett had the pleasure of visiting El Bodegon Supermarkets twice this month, where the community warmly welcomed him. Commissioner Barnett and his staff distributed resident and service guides, providing valuable information about free services and resources in Palm Beach County.

El Bodegon Supermarkets are a vital hub in our community, connecting residents to essential information, not only tasty nourishing foods. A very special thank you to Carlos Garcia with El Bodegon Supermarkets for welcoming us with open arms and allowing us to help our people.

Mid-County Senior Center in Lake Worth

Commissioner Barnett recently had the pleasure of spending time with our beloved seniors at the Mid-County Senior Center, listening attentively to their concerns and needs. One common request echoed through the room: a desire for more leafy greens and vegetables to be incorporated into their meals, allowing them to enjoy fresh produce and maintain their health and vitality.

Responding swiftly to this heartfelt plea, Commissioner Barnett teamed up with Palm Beach County Community Services Department and Restoration Bridge International to make a meaningful difference. Commissioner Barnett is thrilled to announce that at the upcoming "Coffee with Mike" event on May 15, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., seniors will have the opportunity to partake in a special food drive. Seniors will be invited to take home as many green produce items as they can carry.

Proclamations

Ambassador Nancy Brinker

At the Board of County Commissioners meeting on May 7, Commissioner Barnett presented a proclamation declaring Aug. 4, 2024 as Nancy G. Brinker Day. Nancy G. Brinker is a three-time ambassador and is regarded as the leader of the global breast cancer movement. Her journey began with a promise to her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do everything possible to end the shame, fear and hopelessness caused by this disease. In 2018, Brinker spearheaded the creation of The Promise Fund of Florida, an organization aimed at increasing survivorship from breast and cervical cancer.

Mental Health Awareness and Trauma-Informed Care Month

At the Board of County Commissioners meeting on May 7, Commissioner Barnett presented a proclamation declaring May 2024 as Mental Health Awareness and Trauma-Informed Care Month in Palm Beach County. Mental health is essential to overall well-being, and it is important to recognize that everyone experiences times of stress and struggles. The Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners recognizes the impact of awareness and education, access to services and the importance of mental well-being to a person’s success and supports the implementation of trauma-informed approaches throughout the systems of care.

Hispanic Education Coalition of Palm Beach County

At the Board of County Commissioners meeting on May 7, Commissioner Barnett presented a proclamation recognizing the Hispanic Education Coalition of Palm Beach County Inc. for promoting and advocating for educational equity in the School District of Palm Beach County. Since 2012, the Hispanic Education Coalition of Palm Beach County Inc. (HEC) has persistently promoted educational equity in the School District of Palm Beach County, advocating for an inclusive educational environment for all students. Through fundraising efforts, including the HEC Gala and La Vuelta Palm Beach, HEC generates vital resources to support its initiatives, such as the scholarship program that provides financial support to Latinx/Hispanic students, ensures access to opportunities for higher education and success, and promotes educational equity to empower Hispanic students.

Restoration Bridge International

At the Board of County Commissioners meeting on May 7, Commissioner Barnett presented a proclamation recognizing Restoration Bridge International (RBI) for filling the gap between available food and those in need. RBI was founded by Pastor Daniel West in 2001 with one goal: “to love our neighbors as ourselves.” It started as a food pantry in a church closet. Since its humble beginnings, it has rescued and redistributed 63 million pounds of food in Lake Worth, Boynton Beach, West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Greenacres, South Bay, Wellington, Royal Palm Beach, Delray, Lantana, Jupiter and anywhere that needs nutritious food.

6th Avenue South Bridge Replacement

6th Avenue South is closed from South Congress Avenue to Grove Street until approximately the end of August 2024. East and West Bound traffic will be detoured via South Congress Avenue, Lake Worth Road (SR 802)/ Lake Avenue/Lucerne Avenue and S. Dixie Highway. Access to Interstate 95 north of 6th Avenue S. is detoured via S. Congress Avenue and 10th Avenue N. Access to Interstate 95 south of 6th Avenue S. is being detoured via S. Congress Avenue and Lantana Road. The ramps for 6th Avenue South at Interstate 95 will remain open and traffic east of Interstate 95 will remain unaffected. Trucks are not to access and travel west of Interstate 95 unless making local deliveries.
