Japan and Its Prints in the Opening to the West, 1853 - 1912

Tom Silver is a former classical guitarist and recording artist who developed an interest in Japanese prints while searching for an unusual gift for his wife. That search sparked a love for this art which grew to encompass Japanese history and culture generally. Mr. Silver's presentation will showcase wonderful print masterpieces primarily from Japan's Meiji Era, a revolutionary period which followed Commodore Matthew C. Perry's mission to Japan in 1853-4, and during which Japan transitioned from feudal state to modern Western-style world power. Meiji-era historical artifacts will be on display. There will also be discussion of relevant historical background. Mr. Silver is a Barnstable summer resident and a New Jersey native who was educated at Drew University and Rutgers University.
Lessons for the Heart

The team of HOW, (Heart of Wellness) will present "Lessons for the Heart". HOW is a unique combination of videos and talks that focus on the tripod for a healthy hearty; movement, nutrition and the foundation of the tripod, "ARE" attitude, relationships and emotions. The program will be informational and inspirational. Also offered is body composition analysis which gives one their metabolic age.

Charlie Fox taught art in W. Hartford for 50 years after serving as a nose gunner in the Air Force during World War II. He is a first rate model ship builder whose work spans 70+ years. His work is in many museums including the Smithsonian, Mariners Museum, Mystic Seaport Museum of America and the Sea and the U.S. Coast Guard Museum. Don't miss this opportunity to see Mr. Fox's work on display at the BSC.

Arthritic Chair

This class is a combination of seated and standing exercises with a chair. It focuses on strengthening your muscles around your joints. It will improve your flexibility and help maintain bone strength. You'll also improve your energy level making daily tasks easier and less painful. Creative movement, props and some music makes it fun! Wear comfortable clothes, shoes and bring water.  Instructor is Liz Saunders.

Zumba Gold Chair with Christina-NEW
Oct. 4-Nov. 29, 10:15-11:15 a.m. Fee-$42
 
Zumba chair exercises, a specialty of Zumba Gold, are offered to those with physical limitations. Chair classes last 20 to 30 minutes to ensure that participants get a workout without overdoing it. Zumba Gold chair workouts begin by transitioning the body into the routine through warm-up moves. These moves will be done to the Latin beat with lots of fun. Instructor is Christina Arabadzhieva.

Get those hearts pumping! One of our favorite instructors is back at the BSC and ready to get everyone moving and shaking, blood flowing and sweat glands working. This is an active class for those that want to push themselves further to fitness. Bring your water and wear comfortable clothes. Instructor is Dianne Francis .

Yogalates with Michelle - NEW
Oct. 6-Nov. 17, 5-6 p.m. Fee-$42
 
Come and try this class that will help you build your stamina and strengthen your core for balance and strength. Enjoy this class where east meets west. It effectively merges the ancient practice of Yoga from the east with the core stabilizing, posture enhancing dynamics of Pilates from the west. Wear comfortable clothes, shoes and bring water.

Tax Preparers Needed
Have Fun Doing Taxes!

If YES, then we are looking to share the fun with you!
 
Since 1968 AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Volunteers have been helping low and moderate income taxpayers complete their Federal and State income tax returns free of charge. 
 
New Volunteers participate in a training program each Fall.  Over a three week period of time (twice a week for 3 weeks) they are trained in the process of completing tax returns.  Counselors, upon passing the required test are assigned to various centers across the Cape.  Preference is given to centers near their homes.  From February through April 15 wonderful people are met and needed help is given.  Schedules are flexible and allow for vacation time.

We all know that NETWORKING WORKS!! And AGE really is an ADVANTAGE!!
Funded and supported by the Massachusetts Association of Councils on Aging(MCOA), we offer a Job Seekers Networking Group program to support and assist people 50+ years who are looking for a new job, new career direction or an encore career. The program will commence the week of October 6, 2016 and continue through June 16, 2017.

Location: Council on Aging: 825 Falmouth Rd (Hyannis): Phone : 508-862-4750    If you are unemployed and actively looking for work, underemployed and looking for a new career direction, or recently retired, not ready to stop working and looking for your "Encore Career", this networking/career coaching program is PERFECT!!!
All meetings are open to anyone who resides in MA and 50+ years old . Participants are provided with a regularly scheduled, professional forum for networking with peers in a safe and comfortable environment conducive to developing new relationships and developing skills to help them in their career transition.
 
Each biweekly meeting is facilitated by a Certified Career Coach and includes a presentation-workshop on topics relevant to career transition /job search, ample opportunity to network with peers, and 1-1 coaching guidance. Participating on a regular basis will give job seekers the many tools and strategies needed for a successful job search. In addition to our biweekly meetings, we will partner with Career Opportunities in Hyannis, who will co-sponsor Job Fairs designed for the 50+ Job Seekers.

Parkinson's Support Group
4th Monday of  the month at 1 p.m. 
The Barnstable Parking's Support Group brings together individuals with Parkinson's Disease and/or their care providers in a relaxed and social environment.  The meeting is facilitated by trained LICSW.  To enroll, please contact Ellen at 774-487-0530.
Hope Alzheimer's & Dementia Compassionate Alzheimer's Respite, Education
and Support(CARES)
2nd and 4th Thursday from 1-2:30 P.M. 

 This group provides an opportunity for people with memory impairment and their caregivers to participate in two separate support groups - held simultaneously. One group provides information, guidance and respite to caregivers while the other group provides conversation and socialization for those with memory impairment.  The CARES Program takes place every 2nd and 4th Thursday, from 1- 2:30 PM.  Programs are offered at no charge, but registration is required. LGBT Alzheimer's & Dementia Caregiver Support Group
1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
 
This program is designed specifically to support LGBT people Caregiving for someone with memory impairment. The support group provides an opportunity for LGBT caregivers for someone affected by Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia, to share in a safe and welcoming environment and receive disease information and guidance regarding care planning strategies.
 
This group is led by Alan Johnson, LICSW, Director of Community and Family Outreach, Hope Dementia & Alzheimer's Services, and sponsored by the Barnstable Senior Center with support from the Massachusetts Councils on Aging.
 
 Respite is available for those in need. To make arrangements, please contact Barnstable Senior Center Assistant Director, Donna Burns at 508-862-4753.

Brown Bag
ARE YOU 60+ AND COULD USE SOME HELP WITH YOUR FOOD BUDGET?   
 
 
Barnstable Senior Center has a program to help with your food budget.  If you get or will be getting fuel assistance or live in subsidized housing, or receive food stamps you will be eligible for the Brown Bag for Seniors program.  This program consists of a free bag of groceries once a month.  
The grocery bag consists of basic, healthy food ranging from soup to cereal, meat to vegetables, and even an occasional treat.
 
If you have limited mobility we do home deliveries also.  If you have any questions just contact Outreach at 508-862-4754.  Just click on the link below, fill out the form and mail it back to the

Adult Supportive Day Program

The Barnstable Adult Supportive Day Program is designed to provide supportive, professional services and engaging activities for elders who cannot or do not wish to stay alone at home during the day.
 
The program is dedicated to providing a comfortable atmosphere for elders to maintain independence, build new friendships and remain active while aging-in-place in the community. Fees are income based, and transportation may be available for Barnstable residents.

Program hours are Monday- Friday 9 a.m.- 3 p.m.

Outreach Services
Fuel assistance, Pharmacy Programs, Food Stamps (SNAP) and Housing direction and referrals are just a small portion of what our Outreach Department provides. Outreach is an information  hub that can point you toward the agencies that provide assistance for medical, assisted living and basic needs. Activities and Events
The Barnstable Senior Center offers a wide variety of activities and workshops Monday through Friday in the areas of fitness, nutrition, wellness, culture, games, arts, and much more. There are also many clubs that are always open to new members.  In addition, throughout the year we host a number of events including the Friends of the Barnstable Council on Aging sponsored Holiday Dinner and St. Patrick's Day Luncheon, Memorial Day Breakfast, Health and Wellness Expo and more.

Transportation Services
We offer transportation to Barnstable Seniors through our Silver Express Transportation Service. Our drivers will pick you up at your door and bring you to doctor's appointments, grocery shopping, and banking trips. Our vans are wheelchair accessible Our new Nissan Leaf is also now available and both on a first-come, first-served basis. A $5 round-trip donation is appreciated. Here at the Senior Center, you can enjoy a healthy, affordable meal for lunch. Senior Dining provide an opportunity for you to get together with your friends... meet new people... have a reason to get up and out... and enjoy a hot, nutritious meal.

Ask the Nurse Wednesdays
9:30-11 a.m.
Town of Barnstable Nurse, Peg Stanton, will be available in the Health Room at the Barnstable Senior Center to answer all your health questions and concerns and provide information and resources. She will share tips on how to improve your overall health and well-being. This is a great opportunity to get the health information you need in a confidential one-on-one setting.
