PROJECT UPDATE: Crews are scheduled to begin work at the South Main Street/Vermont Route 14 (VT 14) railroad crossing in the City of Barre this September 2025, with the majority of work for the Hill Street railroad crossing scheduled to begin in the spring of 2026.
The Vermont Agency of Transportation is upgrading two railroad crossings in the City of Barre, VT, located on VT 14 near Trow & Holden and NAPA Auto Parts stores, and on Hill Street near its intersection with VT 14 and Ayers Street. The Barre City Railroad Crossing Projects [Barre City STP 2961(3) and STP 6000(32)] will involve reconstructing the at-grade railroad crossing surfaces, making minor realignments to the railroad tracks, installing new active signal warning systems, rebuilding the roadway approaches to the crossings, and adding new signage and pavement markings. The projects are expected to be completed by the fall of 2026.
Crews are anticipated to mobilize to the VT 14 railroad crossing project area and begin installing traffic control signage during the week of September 8. Major work is scheduled to begin the weekend of September 19. Upgrades to the VT 14 railroad crossing will require single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic on VT 14. Work will take place Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and over three weekends between mid-September and early October. Night work is also permitted at the VT 14 railroad crossing. This schedule is subject to change based on the railroad’s schedule.
STAY INFORMED: The project team will begin issuing weekly Construction Updates on September 5, which will outline the work schedule, construction activities, and traffic impacts for the upcoming week. In addition, the team will provide supplemental Traffic Alerts in advance of more significant traffic impacts and periodic Project Updates highlighting major milestones throughout the life of the project.
