Good afternoon.

We are about halfway through the summer so it would be a good time to remind everyone to watch your kids around water. When kids are swimming whether at the public pool, at the neighbor’s house, or at the lake, parents have one job-- giving them your full attention.

August is Drowning Impact Awareness Month; a month we reflect on the impact that drowning and near drowning incidents have on family, friends, emergency personnel and our community. The victim’s family is forever changed, in an instant. And every call that ends in tragedy leaves a scar on the first responders that were summoned to the rescue just a moment too late.

There have been 21 drownings in the valley so far this year - one just last week. That victim was not a child but at 35-year-old man who slipped under the water without anyone noticing. It can happen to anyone. These are the factors that raise the risk of a water-related incident:

-New parents of more than one child.

New pool owners or new residents of Arizona.

Community pool with laxed barriers.

Pool parties with multiple children; babysitters and caregivers.

Pay attention to the risks. Attention. That is what we owe are kids every day, but especially around water. Don’t let them down.

Have a great weekend, and as always, keep cool and stay hydrated!

CITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

Protect the Paws!

Crime Prevention Specialist, Caitlyn Pence, was interviewed for an in-studio news segment with AZFamily. Caitlyn’s involvement came about after she spearheaded an initiative to provide dog paw booties to unhoused individuals with dogs, contacted throughout Glendale by MROP (misdemeanor repeat offender program. Caitlyn's initiative has brought crucial education to pet owners and more importantly, critical relief to their four-legged friends.

Remember, hold your hand on the pavement. If it's too hot for you, it's much too hot for them!

HAPPENING AROUND THE CITY

The Glendale Women's Club is partnering with

the Women's Suffrage National Monument Foundation to aptly recognize

Women's Contributions to American History

“Why aren’t women’s historic contributions woven into the monumental fabric of the National Mall?

That is the question the 116th Congress answered when, in celebration of the centennial of the 19th Amendment, bipartisan leaders in Congress unanimously passed a historic bill establishing the Women’s Suffrage National Monument in Washington, D.C. dedicated to the great women of American history. In 1920, women won the right to vote. Now, we are building the FIRST monument on the National Mall dedicated to the women who shaped our democracy.

The Women’s Suffrage National Monument will be funded in its entirety through private tax-deductible donations. Your donation will ensure that every girl who visits our National Mall will see herself standing amongst the greatest heroes of the American story.

Adopt a Trail

Only a few short months and we will be back outside, hitting the trails and the parks. The City is calling all hikers, equestrian riders, mountain bikers and just plain ol' nature lovers to turn out for our Adopt A Trail program. The donation of volunteers' time in our parks and throughout our trails provides invaluable assistance to the maintenance and ranger staff, and makes our parks a better place for the entire community.

We are always looking for volunteers to keep our parks and trails in order. Complete the Interest Form to learn more about the program and upcoming events.
