Glendale Glitters Ends Early due to COVID Pandemic.
As you know, we had wanted to be able to keep the lights on so our community could come downtown to enjoy the great holiday tradition of Glendale Glitters. Unfortunately, we have increasingly been noticing issues raising public health concerns, primarily relating to vendors restricting free-flowing foot traffic, resulting in people congregating in an already crowded area. Last week, our COVID incident command team recommended we take the step of modifying the hours the lights were on and blocking the streets to prohibit vendors from coming to the area. Those changes were made starting Dec. 26th. Unfortunately, even those measures were not enough to result in a safer public health environment.
There is currently a sharp increase in the number of cases of COVID 19 in both Maricopa County and throughout Arizona, and local hospitals are operating at or over capacity. For the sake of public safety during this pandemic, the decision has been made that starting today, Dec. 31, the Glendale Glitters light display in Murphy Park will no longer be illuminated. The surrounding streets in downtown will remain open and businesses will be free to operate as usual.
