News from Kindergarten
In December, students learned the character trait of kindness during Positivity Project. We brainstormed ideas of different ways that we can show kindness everyday. This included at school, at home or out in public! We created a bulletin board in our hallway called “12 Gifts of Kindness.” Each day we “open” a gift to show the rest of the school a different way that we can show kindness each and every day!
In math class, students learned a new game called “Snap.” The students take turns breaking a stick of cubes and showing one part of the stick while their partner tries to guess the missing part needed to make the total. This partner game is a great way to build fluency with adding to five.
Our Kindergartners spent a week comparing different versions of The Gingerbread Man story. We read The Gingerbread Boy, Gingerbread Baby , Gingerbread Christmas and they also made books  Where is the Gingerbread Man?. The students made a graph showing which part of the gingerbread man cookie they would bite first, they designed a cookie on paper and then decorated a real cookie to enjoy.
First Graders Explore How to
Send a Message Using Sound
First graders have begun their science unit that investigates what makes a sound. We are given the chance to make a “code” with a drum to send a message. We also look at what makes a vibration and how we can manipulate the intensity of a vibration, and therefore the intensity of a sound that we observe. We look forward to continuing to explore the way that a sound is made with additional hands-on investigations throughout this unit.
Second Grade News
Second Graders are using their gross motor skills to include extra PE minutes within the classroom! They are doing a call and repeat song where one group comes up with a dance move and shows the rest of the group. Then the whole group performs that dance move. It continues to the next group. The students are creative in deciding what dance move to use and have to work together and agree on one dance move. They also need to take turns when singing the song and listen to the other groups in order to be able to repeat the dance move!
Alumni Music Survey
The Cortland Enlarged City School District is studying its music program. We want to continue our fine traditions and make improvements for the future. We're reaching out to Cortland alumni, asking you to complete this survey. It will provide our review committee with important information. Thanks, in advance, for your help!
News from the Nurse
School physicals for grades K and 1 will start after the holiday break. If your child has already received a physical from their own doctor, please send a copy to the nurses office. We have a Nurse practitioner here to complete the required physicals that K and 1st graders need to have.
