This morning at breakfast in a crowded Cafe Bernard, owner Bernard Moffroid took a moment to chat. "July and August were the busiest months we've had in 25 years," he reported happily.

The caboose has been a revolving door this last few weeks with people dropping in to pick up their discount ski vouchers and that's the message we're hearing all around. More people are out on the streets, and increasingly are shopping, dining and enjoying services in Basalt.

There's been a flurry of events around town and more to come, but events alone don't make a town. We're seeing important opportunities and optimism about our community and it's future. Key decisions are ahead and the passion that infuses town meetings and editorial content is, in our opinion at the Chamber, a recognition of not only of the unprecedented number of development proposals before us but our opportunity as citizens to play a profound role in decision-making.

See the column to the left and below for upcoming community and Chamber networking events. If you're looking for ways to participate, consider attending the Council and other Town meetings or join a Chamber committee. Meanwhile, we'll continue to keep you informed about civic, planning and development issues in this newsletter and welcome your input.

Warm regards,
Robin Waters

Whitewater Park in Basalt?
The possibility of a Roaring Fork River Whitewater Park along Two Rivers Road in Basalt has taken a step forward with a positive review last month by the Basalt Planning and Zoning Commission and conditional development approvals on Tuesday by the Town Council. Much needs to be worked out related to parking, cross walks, access for boat trailers, pedestrian safety, river ramp access, signage, maintenance and the construction process. With opportunities for kayaking, tubing and rafting, a whitewater park promises a fun amenity for recreationalists, students and spectators alike.

In addition, according to Pitkin County which has submitted the proposal, the project will enable an important element of river protection and management. Development of the park will allow the county to maintain associated water rights, manage calls, enhance stream flow, alleviate a stressed river segment and improve riparian habitat.

A public hearing and second reading is scheduled for September 22.

Basalt News, Reviews and Kudos
  • Rocky Mountain Institute is still on schedule for end-of-year completion of the Innovation Center on Two Rivers Road.
  • The Roaring Fork Regional Planning Commission met September 3rd to continue review of the Tree Farm PUD application for up to 400 residences and 135,000 s.f. of commercial space totalling as much as 585,474 s.f. of additional development in the mid-valley across from Willits Town Center. Citizens interested in learning more are encouraged to  visit the Eagle County Planning Department's Active Land Use Applications webpage. While both the RFRP and Eagle County Commissioners welcome community comment, their decisions must be based on considerations related to established land use regulations, housing guidelines and the existing comprehensive plan. See also the Mid-Valley Area Community Plan in order to consider how this project conforms to or diverges from the principles and values laid out in these documents.
  • Town Council passed a resolution supporting the Roaring Fork School District and Mayor Jacque Whitsitt recognized a new age of collaboration.

Congratulations to Leticia Guzman, an English Language Learners teacher at Basalt High School,  for being selected as one three finalists for the Colorado Department of Education's 2016 Teacher of the Year Award. Ticia exemplifies the passion, creativity, proficiency and dedication that we believe makes our Basalt schools exceptional. The final decision will be announced in October.

"Police Academy" Comes to Basalt
Have you been wondering how our men in blue spend their days? Now you can find out.

The Town of Basalt Police Department is offering their first citizen's "police academy" free to the Basalt Area community, from Blue Lake to Old Snowmass. The academy offers citizens an opportunity through six classes to learn what their law enforcement officers do and why. Participants will do simulated traffic stops and CSI finger printing, interact with social services, experience defensive tactics and weapons management at the Basalt firing range and more. This will be a fun, personal and interactive experience. A certificate will be awarded at the end of completion. Classes will be held in English and Spanish from September 21 to October 21. For information and to register, email Sgt. Joe Gasper or call (970) 927-1316.
