Sitting in Florida last week watching palm fronds dancing in the wind and waves rolling out on Sarasota Bay, it was hard to imagine snow-capped mountains and fresh powder.

Yet, ski season is just around the corner and it's time to secure your Chamber Discount Voucher. This year there are a few surprises!

Chamber Discount Passes > Spouses Are Now Included

Attention Chamber Member Employers: Starting this year, not only can you purchase discount ski pass vouchers for your bona fide employees, but also for their spouses. Like owners and employees, spouses will be included in the Chamber's annual audit and must call the Roaring Fork Valley their primary residence. Download Aspen Skiing Company's letter for all the details including expanded ticket office hours and the new down-valley location.

Buy your pass by September 11 for the best rates
and enjoy up to $590 off standard season passes.

What's Happening in Basalt?
Sitting in Florida watching palm fronds dancing in the wind and waves rolling out in the Sarasota Bay, Basalt seemed a long distance away. Yet I was drawn in by all that was happening as the weeks flew by:
  • the Town's hard-working Planning & Zoning Commission presented new guidelines for shaping the Pan and Fork and the Town approved further study;
  • The long-stagnant retirement housing project in the Southside neighborhood dropped out and a 180-home residential project (110 units approved back in 2009) has resurfaced for the same 18-acre parcel
  • The Town approved a creative buy-back/long-term lease of land from the Roaring Fork Conservancy (RFC) giving a needed boost to the Basalt-based watershed organization's proposed new River Center
  • A study commissioned by the RFC highlighted the monetary value of fishing and importance of maintaining healthy rivers in its conclusion that fishing on the Frying Pan River pumps $4 million into the Roaring Fork Valley economy
  • The Town's forward movement hit a bump in this week's Council meeting when a majority crowd expressed concerns about a proposed pre-development agreement and the Council deadlocked on the resolution to move forward. An equally passionate group expressed frustration at the Town's perceived slow pace concerned that a golden opportunity is slipping away.
  • Concerts in Lion's Park continued and the Friday night All-In Country Dance was by all accounts a grand success.
With all that's going on, the Town of Basalt staff are unimaginably busy raising needed funds for the Basalt underpass, balancing myriad visions for development and open space, fighting for affordable housing and evaluating and commenting on multiple development proposals certain to have a profound influence on the shape of our economy and lifestyle.

We continue to maintain a watchful eye and encourage our members to communicate with us with your ideas and opinions.

Sincerely,
Robin
