1988 - A World Series to Remember - Game 1
Mike Davis has just been intentionally walked to avoid the possibility of him hitting a home run and tying the game...Then something amazing happened...
"And look who's coming up," Scully said on the NBC broadcast. "All year long, they looked to him to light the fire, and all year long, he answered the demands until he was unable to start tonight with two bad legs. ... With two outs, you talk about a roll of the dice, this is it."
I remember sitting in my in-laws house watching the game. Out hobbled Kirk Gibson...I yelled to my then boyfriend (now husband), "GIBBY's coming to the plate!" Boy, he sure got into that room fast.
Davis stole a base...putting the tying run at second. After a few swings, the count was full, Gibson stepped out of the box. When he stepped back in, Eckersley threw him a 3-2 backdoor slider.
"High fly ball into right field, she is gone! In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened." Vin Scully
Around the bases Kurt Gibson limped...bad knees moving him slowly but determinedly around to his goal...Arms pumping in celebration. His team and coach streaming out of the dugout to greet their de facto leader at home base.
Oh yeah, it feels like just yesterday.
