Welcome to our Basic and Clinical Research Programs Newsletter.
The goal in creating this newsletter is to keep our members informed and involved. We are highlighting opportunities for collaborations, new funding opportunities, new grants and promotions, new members, along with past and upcoming seminars and events.
We always welcome your suggestions and contributions for future issues. Past issues of the Basic and Clinical Research Programs Newsletter can be found online here at the Rutgers Cancer Institute's website.

Dear Program Members,
As 2020 comes to a close, I reflect on the inspiring efforts made by the Research Program members to continue their cancer research in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic. New findings, publications, and grants occurred even as laboratories operated at significantly reduced capacities in order to practice social distancing and curtail the spread of viral disease. The efforts of our clinical research teams, working under difficult circumstances, provided our patients with continuing access to clinical trials and new cancer therapies during this time. With research meetings, conferences, and symposia moved to entirely virtual platforms, we continue to foster the sharing of ideas and grow potential collaborations to advance cancer research. With the new vaccines against COVID-19 beginning to be administered, the curtailment of the pandemic is finally within reach, and with it comes the prospect of a gradual return to a more normal routine. As the end of these unprecedented times appears in sight, it is important that we continue to advance our scientific mission, but we must remain vigilant with respect to public health safety measures to keep our patients and ourselves safe.
I wish everyone a healthy and enjoyable holiday season.
Best wishes,
Eileen White, PhD
Deputy Director, Chief Scientific Officer, and Associate Director for Basic Research

Research Programs and Catchment Area Alignment
|
|
The term “catchment area” is often not immediately familiar to members of the Research Programs. In the simplest terms, the catchment area is the geographic area served by an institution. Rutgers Cancer Institute’s catchment area is the entire state of New Jersey, a place with great racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and other diversity and multiple cancer health equity issues. As the only NCI-designated cancer center in New Jersey, Rutgers Cancer Institute’s catchment area work includes establishing and aligning research priorities based upon populations and communities for which there are the greatest disparities in cancer incidence, morbidity, and/or mortality.
Research relevant to the catchment area applies to basic, translational, and clinical researchers as much as it does to those in population science. For example, basic laboratory research on lung cancer, efforts to engage more diverse patient populations in cancer clinical trials, and genomics research on hereditary cancer could all be considered catchment area relevant, for they align with research priorities set forth by Rutgers Cancer Institute to promote cancer health equity and reduce disparities. Researchers who consider their current and future research endeavors from the catchment area perspective may find new opportunities for funding and collaboration, as well as added significance to their already important work. This new section of the newsletter will serve to inform and link the Basic and Clinical Research Program members with such resources and opportunities.
Those interested in learning more about catchment area alignment, and who may already be doing catchment area relevant research, are encouraged to contact Rita Musanti, PhD, APN-BC, Assistant Director for Community Outreach and Engagement, at rita.musanti@rutgers.edu

Virtual Cancer Research Symposium
|
|
Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Princeton University jointly hosted the inaugural Cancer Research Symposium on Friday, November 20, 2020. This virtual event began with Opening Remarks by Eileen White, PhD and featured sessions on Cancer Metabolism (chaired by Joshua Rabinowitz, MD, PhD), Cancer Genomics (chaired by Shridar Ganesan, MD, PhD), Tumor Microenvironment (chaired by Yibin Kang, PhD) and Understanding and Addressing Cancer Burden in the Population (chaired by Anita Kinney, PhD, RN, FAAN, FABMR). Presenters included Joshua Rabinowitz, MD, PhD, Eileen White, PhD, Shridar Ganesan, MD, PhD, Olga Troyanskaya, PhD, Yibin Kang, PhD, Michael Verzi, PhD, Anita Kinney, PhD, RN, FAAN, FABMR, Cristine Delnevo, PhD, MPH, and Heather Howard, JD. The symposium also included short ten-minute presentations by trainees and faculty members from Rutgers University and Princeton University and three-minute poster flash talks. The evaluation surveys indicated uniformly outstanding feedback from the participants.
Close to 230 participants attended the virtual symposium, with strong representation from Princeton University and Rutgers University. We hope future symposia will have in-person attendees.
