by Ekwueme Michael Thelwell

Reception: September 9, 2022, 6-8pm

Please join us for a personal remembrance of Leonard Baskin by his friend and contemporary, Ekwueme Michael Thelwell. Professor Thelwell was a founding chairman of the W. E. B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American studies at the University of Massachusetts. In conjunction with this 100th anniversary exhibition of Leonard Baskin’s birth, we are pleased to have Professor Thelwell discuss his relationship with Baskin, the artist’s political life, his character, and his place in the culture of his time.

Professor Thelwell will speak 6:30-7:00 with time for questions afterward

And join us October 6, 2022 for a virtual presentation by Richard Michelson and Mary Dolan from the FDR Memorial Legacy Committe on Baskin and his work on the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington DC.

Baskin and Politics
An Exhibition on the 100th Anniversary of His Birth

August, 15, 2022 marks the one hundreth anniversary of Leonard Baskin’s birth, a century rife with political strife and violent conflict, circumstances that Baskin never shied away from in his work. Much of Baskin’s artwork was overtly political. He constantly gravitated towards the marginalized, always illuminating the plight of the persecuted and exposing the tyrant, though he was aware of how easily the oppressed could become the oppressor.
