Dear Bath City Fan,

The unexpected break last Saturday was not something that Bath City asked for, but you certainly can't say that the team have not made good use of the extra time.

Intensive training sessions, where by all accounts players and management worked extremely hard, have been the order of the day.  DVDs have been watched and re-watched.  It was, as Director of Football Andrew Jones described it, 'a mini-pre-season.'

Saturday's home match against Southport is a great opportunity for City to improve what has been a difficult start to the season.  The support from City fans during some difficult matches, especially against Forest Green Rovers, has been fantastic.  Positive support has a much bigger impact on the players than we can imagine, so let's keep it up!

Up the Romans!  See you Saturday!

Saturday 10 September 3pm - Southport

The Sandgrounders would have been relegated last season if not for Rushden & Diamond's collapse, but that doesn't mean they won't be challenging opponents for City.  City took all six points from their last two meetings, but Liam Watson and his men will do their best to avoid this for a second year.  Bath City Youth will make their first appearance of the season in the half-time match.

Tuesday 20 September 7:45 - Luton Town

Former top-flight Luton Town come to Twerton Park to play Bath City for the first time under the lights!  This will be one of the biggest night games of the season - don't miss it!

ADIE BRITTON ON THE BREAK AND SOUTHPORT
Adie Britton

Manager Adie Britton speaks to the Insider about the week off and the outlook for the team against Southport on Saturday:

"We were tired after the first six games came so quickly, and this break has been the first time to have intensive training since the season began. We've trained four times in the past six days and it's given us time to work on our shape. The lads have worked very hard. There's also been time for some players to get over injuries.  Marley will hopefully play completely injury free for the first time this season on Saturday. He's been dogged by a sore ankle since the first match. Scott has a back strain and hasn't had free movement.  He's been having treatment every day."

"We've also analysed all the games to date. We had a good look at the DVDs from every match. Clearly we don't have a problems with possession.  If we were converting our chances we'd have had a reasonable start. We're now entering an important phase of games and now is the time to show some improvement in the attacking third."

"The attitude going into the Southport match will be positive. We think as a group that we have a good side. Things haven't gone brilliantly for us and could have gone better, so we're just desperate to get out there and prove it. I have huge confidence in the players and I'm really looking forward to getting out there."

APPROPRIATE HEADGEAR
HatsThe recent run of foul weather should have City fans searching through their closets for their warm-weather gear on Saturday.  One question that hundreds of City supporters are sure to be asking is, "Where's my hat?"

The average British male loses 2.3 hats per winter season, so you won't be alone if you can't find your City hat from last year.  Luckily the club shop can step in and help!  Both these beanie and baseball-style hats will be on sale before the Southport match for just 10 each!

SPECIAL SATURDAY TRAINING SESSION
Saturday TrainingWith an unexpected break in the season following the postponement of the York City match last Saturday, the Bath City players have been enjoying extra training time.

Although there will be five practice sessions in total running up to the Southport match, the Saturday session was the most intensive.

It kicked off at 9:30 and began with a review of every match so far, including what has gone right and what has gone wrong. Then Assistant Manager Lee 'Archie' Howells spent two hours working on playing patterns and formations.  He interrupted the play regularly to make comments and explain where he thought improvements could be made.  The players were worked very hard and given a chance, if only for a day, to have the sort of extensive daytime training that full-time clubs get every day.

WHO IS ANDREW JONES AND WHAT DOES HE DO?
Andrew Jones
Former Paulton Rovers manager Andrew Jones joined Bath City over the summer as Director of Football.  Sometimes this position can be a source of conflict between managers and boardrooms, but that's not the way it is at Twerton Park.  Andrew explains:

"Adie is doing a full-time job (managing a football team) with part-time hours.  There are a lot of jobs that he used to do, like player contracts, dealing with agents, and pre-match paperwork that I take off him now. The more that I can do for him the easier his main job, managing the team, becomes. I also work have other duties as a director, and have helped set up the TR Hayes Premier Lounge and worked with Commercial Manager Ian Jones.  We're working to make Bath City closer to the professional club that we want it to be."

Andrew juggles his Bath City duties with his flower wholesale company, an industry with notoriously early hours.  "When the team coach arrives back to Bath from York City next week, I'll already be two hours late for work!"

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT TEAM LAUNCHES
Youth Development TeamThe Bath City Youth Development Team held its first training session Monday night at the Bath City Academy home, Writhington School.

The Youth Development Team will not play regular matches or compete in a league.  It is a chance for local youngsters from Under 10s to Under 16s to get extra expert coaching in addition to playing in their local youth team.  But it is also a chance for Bath City to identify and nurture local talent into the Academy and first team players of the future.

Callum Owen, age 9 (pictured centre) has already got ambitions.  "I want to be the next Marley Watkins!"   (Read more here)

Bath City Academy manager Billy Clark is still on the lookout for more players for the Youth Development Team, especially in the Under 16 age-group. If you are interested call Billy on 07968 086836 or email bclark@wsbe.org.uk
DOES ALEX RUSSELL EVER WALK ALONE?
Alex Russell

After Saturday's extra-long practice one player found a match on the Sunday.

Alex Russell played in the Selco Grand Masters Final, a special 6-a-side tournament for over 35s.  The final was broadcast live on Sky, and Alex played alongside Aldershot manager Dean Holdsworth for Liverpool.  Liverpool?  Alex explained:

"I started my career at Liverpool.  I was a youth player there for two years, including when they last won the title in 1990.  I was probably cleaning Peter Beardsley's boots.  I've been asked to play in these Masters games several times, but I've never been free before.  But we got beaten 6-4 by Leeds, so I travelled all that way just for a sixteen minute match!"

TWERTON HERITAGE DAY
Twerton Heritage Day

The Right Worshipful Mayor Bryan Chalker and Bath City Vice-Chairman John Reynolds have a shared interest:  the heritage of our lovely city of Bath.

When talking together recently they came up with a plan to hold a Twerton Heritage Day, and the logical place to hold it was at Charlie's at Twerton Park.  The date and time has been set and the posters printed:  Sunday 25 September from 10am!

This won't just be a chance for you to come and learn about Twerton's Heritage - the organisers want people to come and share their own memories from Twerton's past.

John Reynolds is especially interested in Twerton's industrial past. "There have been lots of industries over the years in the area.  Even Rotork started on this side of town. We're looking for people with all of that history to come to Twerton Park and tell us all about it."

THE ANTHONY DURBIN MEMORIAL TROPHY

Supporters FC vs AFC Durbin United

A large crowd gathered at Twerton Park on Sunday for the Anthony Durbin Memorial Trophy match between Bath City Supporters FC and AFC Durbin United.

The match is held annually in memory of Anthony Durbin, a local footballer who died tragically three years ago.

An enthusiastic Supporters FC failed to hold off AFC Durbin, and the final score ended 10-0.

Anthony's father Kevin said, "It was great to be part of this occasion and particularly special for the whole family, as Anthony's last match also took place at Twerton Park".
