Feb. 3, 2023

Greetings -

Thanks very much for your interest in Bay Area bluegrass and old time music events -- and for sending me additions, updates, and corrections. Please visit the Bluegrass Signal web site for the latest listings and playlists, as well as a number of items and articles of interest to bluegrass and old time music fans.

Lots goin' on ... the images above spotlight just 5 days(!) of Acoustic Roots & Branches shows this month at the Freight ... all presented by KALW! See below for details.

I appreciate all the information about upcoming area concerts, jam, instructional opportunities, and more. Now that Bluegrass Signal's length has been restored to 90 minutes, the broadcast again includes a calendar of upcoming area events, often with musical previews. In fact, the Feb. 11th show is ALL previews!

Next month marks the return of the On Air Folk Festival, a cooperative project with other KALW programmers in Saturday's acoustic zone, now happening at these times:

  • 2:00 pm: Folk Music & Beyond with JoAnn Mar & Robert Campbell
  • 4:00 pm: Bluegrass Signal
  • 5:30 pm: A Patchwork Quilt with Kevin Vance

Stay tuned for details about which six area bands will be performing live in the studio on Sat., March 4th from 2-7 pm.

I hope you're able to hear and/or play some music soon -

PeterT

Very sad news:

On Feb. 1st, the San Francisco Bay Area lost one of its musical treasures — who also was universally regarded as a really good guy. We'll remember Dix Bruce on two upcoming editions of Bluegrass Signal -- see the end of the newsletter for details -- and wherever people playing music are having fun and lifting spirits.

R.I.P. Dix Bruce (1952-2022)

On Feb. 1st, the San Francisco Bay Area lost one of its musical treasures — who also was universally regarded as a really good guy.

Dix Bruce was a award-winning multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer, and writer, born and raised in the Midwest, where he began playing guitar when he was 12. After college, he relocated to the Bay Area where his interest in hybrid acoustic string band music led him to David Grisman’s quintet in the mid-1970s. Dix eventually teamed up with the mandolinist and edited the magazine Mandolin World News from 1978 until 1984.

In 1978, Dix formed the band Back Up & Push to explore the emerging possibilities of swing and jazz on acoustic stringed instruments. The band toured the west coast throughout the '80s and accompanied Bruce on his album, "Tuxedo Blues," which features many of his original instrumental and vocal compositions.

Dix Bruce also released two LPs with mandolin legend Frank Wakefield, eight big band CDs with the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra, four recordings with guitarist Jim Nunally, soundtracks for documentaries and computer games, and his own collection of American folk songs titled "My Folk Heart." His most recent release was a collaboration with Julie Cline of originals and country duets; Dix and Julie were nearing completion of a sequel to this album when Dix passed away earlier this week.

Bruce wrote for Acoustic Guitar, FRETS, Bluegrass Unlimited, Flatpicking Guitar, and The Fretted Instrument Guild of America. Mel Bay Publications released more than fifty (50!) of his instructional books and videos, including the six best-selling editions of "The Parking Lot Picker’s Songbook," one for each instrumentalist/singer in bluegrass bands, explorations of the guitar styles of Doc Watson and Jerry Garcia, and his "BackUp TRAX" series of play-along, music-minus-one sets for learning pretty much any style of music.

Dix Bruce’s wonderful sense of humor, deep appreciation of multiple musical genres, and flat-out joy at playing music comes through with every note. On the Feb. 4th edition of Bluegrass Signal, Leah Wollenberg plays music from many of Dix’s releases. And on Feb. 18th, PT will present highlights from two sessions broadcast live on KALW as part of On Air Folk Festivals, one with Dix & Julie Cline, the other a guitar trio of Dix, Mike Wollenberg and Barry Solomon.
