E-NEWSLETTER VOLUME 9,  ISSUE 7/ July  2019

Welcome to our Newest Commissioners!
We are pleased to introduce two of our newest Commissioners, Ann Hartnell and Karl Ballestad. Check in next month when we introduce Thomas Mandli and Mary Dobbins.

Ann is a  l ong -time  resident of Marinette   County
who  has been involved in  local government and economic development for many years that included planning and implementing streetscaping, and serving on the board of directors of the Marinette County Association for Business and Industry (MCABI). As the Executive Director for MCABI, she also did community development, built a business and industrial incubator, and supported business and industry throughout the County. Ann's background includes 30 years in nursing, graphic design and running a small business for 15 years. Now she is enjoying retirement, working as a SCORE volunteer, and is a member on the Housing Authority board.

Karl was born and raised on a dairy farm in Door County. He graduated from Door-Kewaunee County Teachers College in 1967, and taught in a one room country school for one year.  In 1967, Karl was offered a position in the Oconto School District, and taught there for 35 years.  Karl became an Oconto County Board Supervisor in 2013. Karl is excited to become a member of the Bay-Lake Regional Planning Commission, and looks forward to helping this organization meet its many goals.

Kewaunee County  Invasive Species
Treatment and management of invasive plant species in Kewaunee County has started with this being the second year of treatment. In 2018, the EPA awarded the regional planning commission funding to manage at least 1,000 acres of invasive phragmites, wild parsnip and Japanese knotweed in the county. Wild parsnip is being treated now, with phragmites and Japanese knotweed being treated from mid-August to early September. For more information regarding sites being treated or to potentially have your land treated, visit Bay-Lake Invasive Species Management. The site offers an interactive map and permission form to possibly have one's property treated.

If you have questions about this project or are interested in participating as a landowner in Kewaunee County, please contact Madison Smith.

Lakeshore Recreation Study

The staff have just finished up on several projects that were f unded partially under the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program. One of those projects includes a Lakeshore Recreation Study for Kewaunee, Manitowoc, and Sheboygan
counties. The study is currently under final
review and will be available to the public soon,  along with an online storymap that identifies lodging, recreation, retail, historic/cultural, and marina facilities along the lakeshore. A link to that storymap and the final report will be available on the Commission's website sometime in August.

Where to Find Federal Disaster Declarations?

You can find the latest federal emergency and disaster declarations, and prior declarations on FEMA's disaster declarations webpage

Migratory Pollinators

Migratory pollinators, such as monarch butterflies,  play a crucial role in flowering plant reproduction and crop production. However, these species are rapidly declining in population due to loss of suitable habitats along their migratory routes.
