Managing Urban and Rural Stormwater Runoff in Karst Environments

The Bay-Lake RPC, East Central WI RPC, UW-Extension, and Niagara Escarpment Resource Network are sponsoring a workshop about managing urban and rural stormwater runoff in karst environments. Municipal officials and stormwater management staff are encouraged to attend, especially those in Door, Kewaunee, and Brown Counties.

The event will take place Thursday, October 9, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. at Liberty Hall in Kimberly, Wisconsin.

"Karst" is a landscape created when water dissolves rocks such as dolomite and some limestone. The rocks are dissolved along fractures to create sinkholes, caves and other conduits. Water moves readily through these openings carrying sediment, nutrients, pathogens and other pollutants directly into groundwater. Karst landscapes are prevalent in northeast Wisconsin, and many population centers lie within these vulnerable zones. In several cases, karst sinkholes and local groundwater resources are impacted (or will potentially be impacted) as urban development and stormwater infrastructure are constructed. The workshop will provide planning and public works staff, consultants, stormwater engineers, and elected officials with background information on these issues, as well as current 'best practices' to be considered in these environments. A detailed program and online pre-registration can be found here.
