Roland Velasco for
Gilroy Mayor

Roland Velasco's work as a city councilmember, as a county policy analyst, and on regional commissions give him the in-depth knowledge and experience that make him a great choice to be Gilroy's next mayor.

Roland Velasco was elected to the city council in 2014.  He had also served two terms on the council previously from 1999 to 2007.  In his day job Roland works as a Land Use Policy Analyst for Mike Wasserman, the Santa Clara County Supervisor who represents the south county district.

Velasco has served on several boards in the community, including the Rebekah Children's Services Community Advisory Board, the Gilroy Gang Task Force, and Leadership Gilroy.

He has also served on several Santa Clara County Commissions:  Water Commission, Recycling and Waste Reduction Commission, Local Agency Formation Commission, and Emergency Preparedness Council.  He is currently a Fire Commissioner for the South Santa Clara County Fire District.

Among his priorities Velasco says that he will "work hard to make sure our growth rate doesn't exceed our ability to provide city services to our current residents, promote smart economic development, exercise fiscal accountability and ensure the safety and security of our citizens."

Roland Velasco grew up in Gilroy and graduated from Gilroy High School.  He served in the US Army in West Germany as an intelligence analyst during the Cold War.

After returning from the Army Roland attended Gavilan College and then San Jose State, where he graduated with a degree in political science, with a concentration in public administration.  Later on, he earned a Master's in Public Administration at the University of San Francisco.

He and his dog Ava are active volunteer members of the County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Team.  He lives with his wife and three children.  You can find out more about Roland on his campaign website.

Grow Elect Supports Bay Area Latino Republican Candidates

The number of Latino Republican candidates in the greater Bay Area has grown dramatically, with 16 candidates running for office this fall, most with assistance from Grow Elect, a political action committee that recruits, endorses, trains, and funds Latino Republican candidates for public office.

Some of the most prominent are those already in office, who are running this fall for reelection or to move up to higher office.  Hollister Mayor Ignacio Velazquez   is running for reelection.  Hercules Mayor Dan Romero, who was elected mayor by his council, will be running for reelection to the city council.

Gilroy Councilmember Roland Velasco is running for Mayor.  And Bob Nuñez, Milpitas Unified school board member and also Chair of the Santa Clara County Republican Party, is running for Milpitas City Council.

Richard Perez, a Soledad councilmember; Rick Badillo, a board member of the Morgan Hill Unified School District; and Fernando Navarro, board member of Antioch USD, are running to retain their positions.

The following candidates, listed by county, are running for election to city councils:
Jaime Patiño, Union City Council
Abraham Aguayo, King City Council
Tony Villegas, Salinas City Council, District 6
Lionel Largaespada, Benicia City Council
Robert Marin, Fairfield City Council

In addition, the following candidates are running for partisan office:
Luis Wong, Assembly District 20
Carlos Santamaria, Congressional District 5
Antonio "Tony" Amador, CD9
Angel Cardenas, CD14

The following additional two candidates have already won their races, as no opponents filed against them:

Teresita Murillo, Morgan Hill School Board Trustee, District 7
Edward Duarte, Dublin San Ramon Services District Board of Directors

All of the candidates above have been endorsed by GROW Elect, except the Congressional candidates, as Grow Elect is a state PAC. GROW Elect is headed by Ruben Barrales, a former San Mateo County Supervisor and Director of the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs for President George W. Bush.  You can learn more about Grow Elect on their website.
