Free Sport Physicals Offered at Bayless High School

It is free sport physical time again at Bayless High School.  All students who will participate in sports, cheerleading, and dance in junior high or high school must have a current physical on file.  Your child can receive a free physical while at school, which will be good for the entire 2013-2014 school year.  Have your child see the school nurse for permission forms.  Again, this is a free service and your child will need no other physical for the next school year.

Sponsorship
BEST was able to donate $90 to Mrs. Zurliene's Diversity Club last week in order to sponsor one student to be able to attend the Annual Peace Jam in Nashville, TN, January 25 - 27. Peace Jam is an organization that serves to create young leaders committed to making positive personal change and learning about the Top 10 World.  BEST is honored to aid our students with such convictions to make a difference in the world and in our community. Thank you Mrs. Z for being such a dedicated teacher!

Bayless Studies Facility Improvements
by Ron Tucker, Superintendent

Bayless School District has a proud history and a bright future.  The current Bayless Middle School once represented a state of the art facility which encompassed a practical design with a plan for the future.  It was built as a Works Progress Administration project and was completed in 1935 at a cost of $ 144,915.00.  The building has served our community and its students well over the years and has been adapted to meet our changing needs.  Its time-proven usefulness reminds us to think ahead as we plan for the education of our students and the renovation and maintenance of our facilities.  The building's historic cupola is now featured prominently on our new District logo.

On Monday, February 4th, the District Facilities Committee met and heard preliminary plans discussed for renovating the retaining wall, field and track from representatives of the District's architectural firm, KRJ. In addition, the pathway to a revised District facilities master plan was also discussed.

Ideally, over the next few years, the District will see our elementary buildings joined, our secondary schools joined for improved security, some common spaces renovated, and the fields behind the elementary school building improved. We want to invite anyone who has an interest in the maintenance/renovation work the District will be undertaking to attend the future meetings. If you are interested in providing input or working with our committee, please email me directly at rtucker@bayless.k12.mo.us.

Ruzicka Inspires with Numbers

Mrs. Amy Ruzicka's Middle and High School Pre-Algebra and Algebra I classes have put a mathematical spin on the new year.  Throughout the month of January, students have feverishly generated solutions for Drexel University's 2013 Math Game.

The rules are simple: use the numbers 2, 0, 1, and 3 each only once with a variety of mathematical symbols and operations to equal the numbers 1 to 100.  While several of the solutions are quite simple, others are very complex.  Students used mathematical concepts such as exponents, square roots, factorials (4 factorial or 4! means 4x3x2x1=24), double factorials (6!! = 6x4x2=48), fractions, and decimals in their solutions.  Sample solutions include(2+0+1)^3= 27 and (3!)!! + sqrt(10^2)=58. You can find more information at http://mathforum.org/yeargames/

Valentine's Fun, Awesome Students, a Souper Bowl and Spirit Week mark our February

Elementary School

by Aaron Kohler, Principal

We have lots of exciting things happening at Bayless Elementary.  Family Fun Night for students and parents is on February 22 from 6:30 - 8 PM in Building A.  Literacy Night for students and parents is on February 28 from 6:00 - 7:30 PM in Building A.  On February 21, students in grades 2-5 will have a Character Ed assembly featuring the NED Show.

Thank you to the 396 students and parents who attended the Bayless Night at the Magic House.  Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) activities were showcased.  This was a fun and free event for everyone.

Finally, we need our parents' continued help supporting school safety.  We have very good and safe systems in place for our drop off and pickup procedures.   We need everyone to continue dropping off and picking up students behind school.  I have asked our School Resource Officers to assist with parents parking in the parking lot and dropping off students in the morning.  Please note that we will be routing parents dropping off in the front or side parking lot to the back of school.  We appreciate your help following our procedure.

Bayless Middle School
by Paul Sharp, Principal

Ninety-one students qualified as January's Triple Crown winners. These students met the high monthly expectations of 100% attendance, no grade below a C- and no discipline referrals to the office. Of this group of 91, two students were selected from each grade as January's Students of the Month. They are: 8th graders, Cameron Byrth and Ron'Neva Houston, 7th graders, Arnel Talic and Vanesa Hodzic and 6th graders, Tayler Hale and Gabe Landing. The students received a $10 gift card and their picture on the Wall of Fame outside the main office.

In hopes of improving the attendance at Bayless Middle School, a new and exciting incentive was started February 1. From February 1 - May 1, 2013, students are able to earn a trip to Six Flags on May 10. In order to qualify, students cannot miss more than three (3) days of school during this time. Missing three (3) days or less would be a 95% attendance rate. This is the District's goal for everyone. Students will be fundraising to help reduce the cost of the tickets which include transportation and lunch.

Parent chaperons will be needed so let Mr. Sharp know if you are interested and available. We expect our students to be at school unless they are running a fever or have a note from the doctor. The 95% expectation will be closely monitored. Help our students reach that goal by being at school everyday.

Souper Bowl
Mrs. Mudd and Mrs Brown show off student designed Souper Bowls.
BHS thanks all who attended the Souper Bowl and contributed both money and/or soup to help us fill the Affton Food Pantry with many much needed items.  We sold most all of the 200 bowls and collected over $1,000.00 the night of the event.  Students who played a key role in preparing the food, and those who worked hard on the bowls, will be accompanying Mrs. Mudd and Mrs. Brown as they use the money to purchase additional items needed by the pantry.  This was truly a remarkable event as it allowed students to participate on multiple levels and required much collaboration and teamwork between the Art Department and Family Consumer Science Department.  The event was a success and will help feed many families in need right here in our own Affton community.

Spirit Week
BHS will be having a Spirit Week celebration February 20 - 22.  We are excited to announce the theme of the week being "Disney".  Dress up days will reflect the particular movie that each grade level is assigned.  Seniors are assigned Toy Story, Juniors are assigned Phineas and Ferb, Sophomores are assigned Alice in Wonderland, and Freshman are assigned Monsters Inc.

In addition to dress up days, we will have a class door decorating contest.  During each lunch shift we will have Spirit Games where representatives from each class compete in an effort to earn spirit points.  Spirit Week culminates on Friday with the entire school cheering in the gym during the Mock Olympics.  This is highly spirited and fun event as Student Council has many interesting and wacky ways for students to compete against one another all in an effort to win the traditional "Spirit Jug".  We wish all the classes the best of luck as they prepare to compete.
