2018 Awards Ceremony
Here are highlights from Bayside’s 2018 Awards Ceremony, which recognized students in grades 9—12 and took place in late April. 
Spirit of Bayside Award: Emily McCrory
This award is presented by Bayside’s faculty and staff to the graduating senior who, through his/her entire high school career, has made significant contributions to each facet of school life and has exemplified the ideals of Bayside Academy. The recipient of this award is a student who has shown outstanding willingness to go the extra mile for Bayside, has an excellent reputation and is in good standing with other students, has a history of participation in extracurricular activities and has held leadership positions. The recipient must be in the top third of the class academically and must have been enrolled in Bayside for grades 9 through 12 because this award recognizes contributions for the entire high school term.  Emily McCrory is the 2018 recipient of the Spirit of Bayside Award.

Admiral’s Choice Awards: Students Sam Britain & Ansleigh Dailey
The Admiral’s Choice Award student recipients are selected by peers. Awards are given to the junior and the senior who, in the eyes of their classmates, display leadership and respect for both teachers and fellow students, are actively involved in school activities and are positive role models for Baysiders of all ages. Recipients of the 2018 Admiral’s Choice Awards are junior Sam Britain and senior Ansleigh Dailey.

Admiral’s Choice Barbara Froom Faculty/Staff Service Award: Andy Arick
Barbara Froom began her Bayside career as a parent volunteer. She always had a can-do attitude when it came to accomplishing any Bayside task. The Admiral’s Choice Barbara Froom Faculty/Staff Service Award was established in 2008 to honor Mrs. Froom’s service and dedication to Bayside as she retired. The award recipient is a faculty or staff member who is selected by members of the junior and senior classes and who shows a loving commitment to Bayside and a dedication to his or her duties that is inspirational to others. Andy Arick is the 2018 recipient of this award. Andy teaches Upper School English and is the varsity girls soccer coach.
Beverly Warley Award: Maddy McPhillips
This award is presented to an outstanding member of the junior class in memory of Beverly Warley, one of Bayside’s first teachers.

Each year the junior who receives this award is a role model whose academic achievement is commendable, whose attitude is always positive, and who consistently demonstrates kindness and the courage to stand up for his or her convictions. The 2018 recipient of the Beverly Warley Award is  Maddy McPhillips.
David McGonigal Smith Award: Georgia Brown
This award is named for the first headmaster of Bayside Academy. The recipient of the David McGonigal Smith Award is a student who is well-respected by Bayside faculty and students alike.

The recipient makes Bayside a better place by helping build a positive campus culture through his or her daily interactions.

The David McGonigal Smith Award recipient receives a one-time substantial financial award to be applied toward tuition for the following scholastic year. The 2018 David McGonigal Smith Award recipient is junior  Georgia Brown.
Senior Awards —Valedictorian & Salutatorian
Each year, two members of the senior class earn the honor of valedictorian (first in the class) and salutatorian (second in the class). The valedictorian is the student who has obtained the highest academic ranking using a weighted numerical grade point average in his or her junior and senior years at Bayside Academy. The salutatorian has earned the second-highest academic ranking using the same criteria. The valedictorian for Bayside Academy’s Class of 2018 is Paige Hammele (right in photo). The salutatorian for Bayside Academy’s Class of 2018 is Parker Watts.
Senior Award—Ryan Scott Small Scholarship Award:
Abigail Ketchem
This scholarship was established in memory of Ryan Scott Small, a University of Alabama School of Law graduate. It is awarded annually to a Bayside Academy senior who will be attending The University of Alabama in the fall and who, in the opinion of the selection committee, has worked to his or her potential and who has shown determination in the classroom and in extracurriculars.

GPA and test scores are considered but are not the deciding factors. The student’s goals and objectives for his or her education at Alabama play a role in selection. Funds for this award are provided by the family of Sam Small, science department chair and Upper School science teacher. The 2018 recipient of the Ryan Scott Small Scholarship Award is Abigail Ketchem .
Senior Spirit-Builder Award: Seth Shirley
The Senior Spirit-Builder Award goes to the senior who, in his or her love for Bayside Academy, inspires others to cheer on the Bayside Admirals. The 2018 Senior Spirit-Builder Award recipient is Seth Shirley .

Senior Scholars Bowl Awards
Senior Scholars Bowl team members were recognized for providing the leadership, intellectual prowess and dedication that contributed to the team’s tournament wins. For the fourth consecutive year, the group qualified for nationals. For the third year, they won the District Alabama Independent School Association tournament, competed in the state tournament B and brought home the state title.

Seniors receiving certificates for regular attendance and dedication to the team were Ahmad Al-Salem,
Patrick Haley and Emily McCrory.

For his four-year, over-the top performance and amazing geographical knowledge, the award for the 2018 Outstanding Scholars Bowl participant was presented to Grayson York.
Senior Athletic Awards
Gordon & Shirley Sirmon Athletic Awards: Harrison Biggs & Amber Mason
The Gordon & Shirley Sirmon Athletic Awards are based on sportsmanship and leadership on and off the field and go to one male and one female senior student-athlete who have played at least two sports in a school year. This year’s male recipient is Harrison Biggs. This year’s female recipient is Amber Mason.

Bill G. Dickinson MVP Awards: Ansleigh Dailey & Seth Shirley
The Bill G. Dickinson MVP Awards go to one male and one female senior student-athlete who sacrifice themselves for the betterment of the team and who have played at least two sports in a school year. This year’s male recipient is Seth Shirley. This year’s female recipient is Ansleigh Dailey.

The Bryant-Jordan Student-Athlete Scholarship Program: Abigail Ketchem
This year’s area nominee in the Bryant-Jordan Student-Athlete Scholarship Program is Abigail Ketchem.

Junior Book Awards
Harvard Book Award—Ty Kannegieter   
The Harvard Book Award is a nationwide program of the Harvard Alumni Association. It provides an opportunity for recognition of the outstanding junior who combines excellence in scholarship and high character, along with achievement in other fields. The 2018 Harvard Book Award recipient is Ty Kannegieter

Jefferson Book Award—Sam Britain
The Jefferson Book Award was established by the University of Virginia to recognize outstanding students during their junior year. Bayside faculty recognizes the recipient as a student who embraces creativity and innovation, embodies the spirit of discovery, and is a demonstrated citizen leader who works to improve the community locally or globally. The 2018 Jefferson Book Award recipient is Sam Britain.

Washington and Lee University Book Award—Mac Douglas  
This award goes to the junior who exhibits the classic combination of core values of Washington and Lee University—demonstrated academic excellence, personal integrity, strength of character, participation in extracurricular activities and leadership. The 2018 Washington and Lee University Book Award recipient is Mac Douglas.

Bryn Mawr Book Award—Aubrey Engeriser      
The recipient of this award is a female member of the junior class who embodies the core characteristics of a Bryn Mawr woman: a driven and passionate learner with a clear sense of purpose. She is inspired by and celebrates differences and seeks to transform herself, her community and the world. The 2018 Bryn Mawr Book Award recipient is Aubrey Engeriser .

Sewanee Excellence in Writing Book Award—Rebecca Klimjack
The University of the South presents the Sewanee Excellence in Writing Book Award to outstanding juniors in more than 200 high schools across the nation. The recipient of this year’s award was chosen by a special committee from Bayside Academy on the basis of scholarship, leadership, demonstrated excellence in writing and the potential she has shown for future success as a writer. Also taken into consideration were student interests, activities, and school and community achievements. The 2018 Sewanee Excellence in Writing Book Award recipient is Rebecca Klimjack

Salem Book Award—Mary Helene Hall
This award is presented to a young woman in the junior class who demonstrates outstanding achievement in the classroom, active involvement in quality high school activities, and exceptional character and commitment to the community. The 2018 Salem Book Award recipient is Mary Helene Hall.

Sam Ansell Book Award—Ty Kannegieter
In honor of distinguished former Bayside history teacher and department chair Sam Ansell, this award is given each year to the junior history student who best represents the ideals of intelligence, achievement, commitment, and analytical ability in the study of history. The 2018 Sam Ansell Book Award recipient is Ty Kannegieter.

Additional Junior Recognitions
Rensselaer Medal—
Riley McGlasson
For more than 90 years, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in conjunction with high schools around the world, has awarded the Rensselaer Medal, which is bestowed upon promising juniors who have distinguished themselves in mathematics and science. Qualifications for selection are that the student must be a junior ranked within the top 10 percent of his/her class, must demonstrate potential for success in a challenging academic environment, must excel in advanced math and science courses, and must exhibit significant involvement in extracurricular activities. The 2018 Rensselaer Medal recipient is  Riley McGlasson.

Bausch + Lomb Honorary Science Award—Aubrey Engeriser
Every year since 1933, Bausch + Lomb has honored outstanding high school science students with the Bausch + Lomb Honorary Science Award. For schools that have been granted the privilege of bestowing this award, one qualified junior may be chosen each year. Winners of the award are automatically considered for the Bausch + Lomb Science Scholarship, which provides each recipient $7,500 per year if he or she enrolls at the University of Rochester. Criteria for consideration include the following: academic excellence in the sciences, rigor of courses taken in the sciences, strong standardized test scores, and successful completion of freshman- and sophomore-year science courses and one semester of a junior-year science course. The 2018 Bausch + Lomb Honorary Science Award recipient is  Aubrey Engeriser.
College Certificates for Juniors
Presbyterian College
These awards carry scholarship stipends should the students attend Presbyterian College. Recipients also are eligible for competition for additional scholarships. In recognition of superior academic achievement and accomplishment on standardized tests, Presbyterian College Certificates were presented to the following students:  Mac Douglas, Emily O’Neill, Bradley Schmidt, Charles Yow .

Wofford
In recognition of scholastic performance, leadership, service to others and demonstration of good character, certificates were presented to the following juniors recognized as Wofford Scholars: Maggie Davis, Jack Hixson .

Furman
The following students were recognized by Furman University as Furman Scholars. These awards also carry scholarship offers should the students enroll at Furman: Kennedy Bedford, Sam Britain, Laurel Cunningham, Aubrey Engeriser, Killian Kahalley, Ty Kannegieter, Sam Koby, Riley McGlasson, Samin Uddin .
Sophomore Book Awards
Elizabeth Bramlett-Donnell Book Award—Elsa Engeriser
In honor of the beloved former Bayside teacher who passed away in 2015, the Elizabeth Bramlett-Donnell Book Award is given each year to the sophomore history student who best represents the ideals of intelligence, achievement, commitment and analytical ability in the field of history. More importantly, the student consistently demonstrates a nuanced approach to the field of European history and has a deep appreciation for the arts. The 2018 Elizabeth Bramlett-Donnell Book Award recipient is Elsa Engeriser.

Peggy Dyson Science Book Award—Elsa Engeriser
This award is granted in memory of former teacher Peggy Dyson, who shared her love of science with Bayside students for 19 years. She taught biology, AP biology, genetics and marine biology. She also guided numerous Science Olympiad teams to the state competition and served as the Honor Council and Environmental Club faculty sponsor. This award goes to a Bayside sophomore who demonstrates a passion for science education, who displays integrity and a natural curiosity about the world and who serves as a positive influence on his or her peers. The 2018 Peggy Dyson Science Book Award recipient is Elsa Engeriser.
Head of School Choice Award—Chandler Passons
The Head of School Choice Award was founded in 2013 and designed to honor one or more talented artists in Bayside’s Upper School. The artist(s) are then commissioned to create a lasting piece for the school that is rooted in something that has inspired them during their time at Bayside Academy. The medium may be anything that is three-dimensional. The original piece will hang in the Administration Building. The 2018 recipient of the Head of School Choice Award is Chandler Passons.

Jeanne Yancey, one of the founders of Bayside Academy, believed in the value of service and was tireless in her work toward the betterment of Bayside.
