Be Brave, Patient, and Happy
Christians are the ones who are with God as children of the Father, as heirs of his glory; here and now they are already free masters of all things. They see even where there is nothing to see. They laugh about false visions and images of the world, even where these still have great power. They stand and walk, even when neighbors—and they themselves—think they see themselves falling into the abyss. They are brave, patient, and happy, even when not only the appearance but the whole massive reality of the world speaks against the possibility of being brave, patient, and happy. They are defiant, and not in some kind of artificial spasm from religious overexertion, but because by being able to believe, they themselves encounter defiance, and because it is held against them and the whole world…what they still expect—longingly but without worry—is the revelation of their Lord as the Lord of world events. That is what it means for Christians to live by their faith.
-Karl Barth, “Reflections on the Life of Faith”, 1946

Pentecost Prayer from Our Sister Church in Cuba
In this season of Pentecost, we were joyed to receive greetings from our sister congregation, El Fuerte Presbyterian Church, in Cárdenas, Cuba. Pastor Alison Infonte Zamora wrote, “The Spirit moves and touches us! The breath of God's wind mobilizes us, and his fire becomes the strength we need to unite, accompany, protect, include, and bring peace...to bear witness to the wonders of God! May the Spirit of God continue to bring our churches closer together, just as Pentecost united such diverse people! May unity and harmony continue to be the visible sign of God's love among us!"
