Welcome Spring!

As April approaches, spring is in full swing across Pottawatomie County. Blossoms are blooming, buds are popping up on trees, and lawns are starting to come back to life; all signals the season’s return. With the time change bringing longer days, there’s a renewed energy in the air—a perfect time for fresh starts, new opportunities, and growth in our community.

At Shawnee Forward, we are increasing our focus on business advocacy with our state and federal legislators. We invite you to join us at the next Legislative Luncheon to stay informed and engaged. We’ve also added a dedicated advocacy page to our website, where you can find the results of our recent legislative issues survey that has been used to develop newly released Legislative Priorities. Visit our website to learn more and get involved in shaping the future of our business community.

Shawnee Forward, in collaboration with Oklahoma Baptist University (OBU), is excited to launch “Shared Plates, Shared Futures,” an innovative initiative aimed at strengthening connections between local business leaders and the next generation of professionals. The event will take place on April 7, 2025, at 6:00 PM, inviting business professionals across Pottawatomie County to take 3-5 OBU students to dinner at a local restaurant of their choice.

This unique event serves as a talent retention and placemaking initiative, fostering meaningful relationships that encourage students to see Shawnee as a place to build their careers and future.

Small Biz Marketing:

Connect Locally, Target Precisely

Local businesses face unique marketing hurdles, but experts say focusing on personal connections and targeted strategies can yield big results.

"Knowing your audience is paramount," advises most marketing consultants. "Don't try to be everything to everyone. Niche down, define your ideal customer, and tailor your approach."

Content marketing is also key. Creating valuable blog posts, videos, and social media content establishes expertise and builds trust. Tell your story, and connect emotionally with customers, and always use high-quality visuals.

Leveraging local opportunities is another vital tactic. Networking at events, partnering with complementary businesses, and sponsoring local initiatives can significantly boost visibility. Participating in local markets and festivals offers invaluable direct customer interaction.

Small businesses have the advantage of building genuine relationships, by focusing on targeted content and local engagement, they can thrive.
