Beyond the Tassel:
Building Connections for Shawnee's Future Workforce
At the Economic Development Summit, we had the privilege of hearing directly from a panel of Oklahoma Baptist University students during the Beyond the Tassel panel. Their insights on life after graduation—whether to stay in Shawnee or seek opportunities elsewhere—echoed a common theme: connections. Connections to the community, to local businesses, and to meaningful opportunities will ultimately shape their decisions.
They shared what they want to see from our community and how they hope to feel more engaged. It was clear—if we want to retain talent in Shawnee, we must be intentional about fostering those relationships. That’s why Shawnee Forward, in collaboration with OBU, is launching Shared Plates, Shared Futures, an event designed to bridge the gap between students and local businesses and community members.
On April 7, 2025, at 6:00 PM, we invite business professionals across Pottawatomie County to take 2-5 OBU students to dinner at a local restaurant of their choice. This simple but powerful experience will give students the chance to connect with professionals, gain insight into career opportunities, and see Shawnee as a place where they can thrive.
Talent retention and placemaking start with building relationships. Let’s take this next step together to ensure Shawnee isn’t just a place where students study—it’s a place where they build their future.
I encourage you to be part of this talent retention event like Indaco Metals and Jersey Mike’s have already done and sign up to participate in this evening of connection. Let’s invest in our future leaders, one conversation at a time.
