Season’s Greetings from Maria’s Bookshop!

That’s right, whether you’re ready or not, ‘tis the season of “season’s greetings.” As I write this, the first winter storm is blowing in, and as disappointed as I am to see this beautiful fall draw to a close, I'm also excited for the upcoming holidays.

At Maria’s Bookshop, preparation for the holidays actually starts as soon as the previous season ends, and by October and November the arrangements reach a frenetic level. Lights and decorations are being strung, the candy canes have been purchased, and our overstock shelves are swollen beyond capacity with the books and gifts we are most excited about for the season. From where I sit, I can see a mountain of the newly updated Joy of Cooking: 2019 Edition , a very heavy looking row of a beautiful, illustrated editions of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire , and more of the 2020 Be Local Coupon Book than we know what to do with.

If you are like me and haven’t even considered starting your holiday shopping yet, there’s really no better place to start than by picking up a copy of Local First’s latest extraordinary coupon book. Not only does the book itself make a great gift, but inside you’ll find a treasure trove of coupons for unique stocking stuffers. Using your Be Local book as a guide doesn’t just make holiday shopping easier for you (it’s basically a checklist of all the best holiday gift destinations in town), it also means you’ll be keeping your purchases local, where the money recirculates countless times. And, while you’re at it, be sure to deposit The Payroll Department’s generous coupon to support Local First and all the amazing work they do.

Happy holidays, and I’ll see you on Noel Night!

BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS
Welcoming the Unwelcome
By Pema Chodron
From the bestselling author of  When Things Fall Apart , an open-hearted call for human connection, compassion, and learning to love the world just as it is during these most challenging times.

In her first new book of spiritual teachings in over seven years, Pema Chödrön offers a combination of wisdom, heartfelt reflections, and the signature mix of humor and insight that have made her a beloved figure to turn to during times of change.
Olive, Again
By Elizabeth Strout
Prickly, wry, resistant to change yet ruthlessly honest and deeply empathetic, Olive Kitteridge is “a compelling life force” ( San Francisco Chronicle ).  The   New Yorker  has said that Elizabeth Strout “animates the ordinary with an astonishing force,” and she has never done so more clearly than in these pages, where the iconic Olive struggles to understand not only herself and her own life but the lives of those around her in the town of Crosby, Maine. Whether with a teenager coming to terms with the loss of her father, a young woman about to give birth during a hilariously inopportune moment, a nurse who confesses a secret high school crush, or a lawyer who struggles with an inheritance she does not want to accept, the unforgettable Olive will continue to startle us, to move us, and to inspire us—in Strout’s words—“to bear the burden of the mystery with as much grace as we can.”
