Regional author, biographer, journalist, and historian James McGrath Morris will be in Farmington to talk about his new book, Tony Hillerman: A Life. There will be copies of his book available for purchase, as well as an author signing after the talk.

I was captivated by the way Susan Orlean’s love of the animals in her new book, On Animals, shines through each individual essay. The author writes about her fascination with all kinds of creatures ranging from chickens and pigeons to mules and tigers.

This warm, witty essay collection celebrates human-animal relationships of all kinds. Orlean brings the reader along with her as she travels around the world from New Jersey to Iceland to Morocco in order to examine the interactions between animals and the people who “own” them.

The author’s friendly, funny voice is just a small part of what makes this book such an entertaining read. Her genuine journalistic curiosity and comical personal anecdotes make this collection feel at once personal and informative.

After every chapter I was astonished and found myself having to share what I learned. This is definitely one of my go-to gift books this holiday season!
