Be Positive!

Are you more positive or negative? The Losada Line — often called the critical positivity ratio — offers a useful way to think about it. Simply put, it compares positive interactions to negative ones. Researchers proposed a tipping point: roughly three positives for every one negative moves relationships from surviving to thriving. In practice, the healthiest relationships often show even higher ratios; some strong marriages report five positives to every negative.

This idea applies everywhere: parenting, marriages, leadership, teams, and workplace culture. Kids respond to encouragement far more than correction; a steady stream of praise builds confidence and makes corrective feedback land better. Couples who exchange frequent small positives — appreciation, humor, touch — create a reservoir of goodwill that helps them weather conflict. In organizations, leaders who prioritize recognition and constructive feedback cultivate trust, creativity, and resilience. Old-school “in-your-face” coaching may get compliance, but it corrodes engagement and morale over time.

The Losada Line isn’t about ignoring problems. Negative feedback, boundaries, and accountability are essential. The point is balance: make positivity the prevailing tone so criticism becomes corrective rather than destructive. Studies have even used positivity ratios to predict outcomes like divorce and team performance — when negativity outweighs positivity, systems become fragile.

How to apply this in daily life:

  • Increase tiny positives: give genuine compliments, say thank you, notice effort. Small moments add up.
  • Use the 3-to-1 rule as a guideline: aim for at least three affirming interactions for every corrective one.
  • Make positives specific: “I appreciate how you handled that meeting” lands more than a vague “good job.”
  • Replace criticism with curiosity: ask questions before judging — it opens conversation instead of escalating conflict.
  • Track and reflect: notice how the tone of your home, team, or relationship changes when you deliberately increase positive exchanges.

Positivity creates a platform for growth. When people feel seen and supported, they take risks, improve, and stay committed. Turn the Losada Line into a habit — not a rigid formula, but a daily practice of choosing more encouragement, appreciation, and warmth.

Do that, and you’ll likely see relationships and teams move from merely functioning to flourishing.

My brother Robert and I had the opportunity to be featured on Jon Gordon’s Podcast on April 25, 2025 and we had a blast doing this. During this time, we paid homage to our sister, Colleen, who passed away two short months prior. Jon did a great job blending this podcast between the two of us and it was one of the most fun experiences I've had with my brother.

In this conversation, we dig into what makes us tick—our shared values, powerful family bonds, and personal journeys through both triumph and tragedy. We talk about leadership lessons from the sports field and the importance of investing in yourself so you can then invest in others. The McLaughlin brothers open up about their commitment to positive leadership and how they're using their certification to pour into organizations, schools, and communities. Give it a listen and get ready to bang the drum (you'll see what I mean)!
