Hi Neighbors,

My heartfelt thoughts go out to the individuals and families affected by the Southern California fires.

With increasing droughts and rising temperatures, the reality is that fire season in California is year-round. As wildfires become more frequent and intense, it is imperative that all of our neighbors have a plan and are prepared.

The San Jose Fire Department has various resources available for the public. From fire-resistant landscaping to insurance preparedness, there is an abundance of information available to protect you and your loved ones.

Additionally, the Santa Clara County FireSafe Council provides education and project assistance to communities residing in vulnerable areas, like the East Foothills, to increase wildfire survivability.

On a more positive note, The Villages Community has taken an active role on emergency preparedness. And this month, they were recognized as the first FireWise USA community in San Jose, making them the largest community in Santa Clara County to receive this certificate! Kudos for ensuring our neighbors are prepared.

My office is always here to support.

It is my pleasure and privilege to serve as your City Councilmember,

AACSA's MLK Luncheon

It was an honor to attend the African American Community Service Agency's 45th Annual MLK Luncheon and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

As he once said, "The time is always right to do what is right." Congratulations to all the award recipients for their commitment to justice and service.

Senior Scam Stopper

Our Senior Scam Stopper at the Atria Evergreen Valley was a great success, providing valuable tools and resources to help protect our seniors from scams and fraud.

Thank you to all who attended and to our amazing partners, the Contractors State License Board, San Jose Police Department and California Department of Insurance, for empowering our community to stay informed and safe!

Community Clean-up at Lake Cunningham

Beautifying our community cannot happen without the help of our neighbors who volunteer their time to help! Thank you to Mayor Matt Mahan for your partnership.

A special thank you to Arvind and Ashok from the Native Plant Society for lovingly maintaining the Native Garden. I had the opportunity to present the Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the Native Plant Society with a commendation the same week as our clean-up!

Strengthening Our Immigrant Communities

Every resident should be able to trust their local government and feel confident in their public safety officers. Which is why I worked with my colleagues, Councilmembers Ortiz, Cohen, and Campos, to put together a memo that ensures we continue to safeguard the rights of our residents, regardless of immigration status.

Public Safety Update

This week, San Jose Police Chief Paul Joseph announced the arrest of three suspects linked to dozens of burglaries targeting the Asian American community in San Jose and other cities in the South Bay.

One of the suspects was identified through the use of a home doorbell camera. Therefore, I highly encourage our neighbors who have doorbell cameras to register for SJPD's C.A.M. Program.

Through the program, SJPD will be able to directly contact CAM registrants who are using video in an area in which a crime occurred. Police would ask CAM registrants to check their video surveillance system for a specific date and time for video that may show activity involved with a crime, such as a getaway car or the direction that a person of interest was headed.

City Hall Update

On January 28th, the City Council will be appointing an interim Councilmember for District 3 from the list of final candidates: Robert Staedler, Carl Eugene Salas, Baltazar Lopez, Danielle Marie Christian, and Jahmal Williams.

Valley Water's Essential Tips to Get Flood Ready

1. Develop an emergency plan: An essential step toward being flood ready is preparing for an emergency. Discuss with members of your household what to do during a disaster. Identify emergency contacts in and out of town and a caretaker for individuals with special needs and pets. Please visit ready.gov/plan for more details.

2.Put your 3-day emergency kit together: Create an emergency kit with tools, supplies, non-perishable food, and water (3 gallons per person). For a detailed list of recommended supplies, please visit ready.gov/kit.

3. Download disaster and emergency apps: Sign up for Santa Clara County’s official emergency alert and warning system, AlertSCC. Use the information provided by AlertSCC to get the most up-to-date information on emergencies and disasters happening in your area.

4. Know your flood risk: To find out if you live in a high-risk flood zone, visit valleywater.org/floodzone. To check whether your house or business is in a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) and learn how to interpret FEMA flood maps, please visit the FEMA Flood Map Service Center.

5. Get flood insurance ahead of time: Most homeowner's and renter’s insurance policies don’t cover damage from natural disasters such as floods. Visit floodsmart.gov to learn about flood insurance policies.

6. Protect your home from flood threats: Valley Water offers free, filled sandbags for residents of Santa Clara County. Sandbag distribution sites can be found here.

7. Keep debris and trash out of our streams: Healthy, flowing creeks reduce flood risks by carrying stormwaters away from properties and roads. Report blockages like wood or debris and dumping in creeks to the Valley Water Watersheds Operations & Maintenance hotline at 408-630-2378 or through Access Valley Water.

8. Avoid floodwaters - Turn around, don’t drown: Understand shallow flooding risks - never walk or drive through flooded areas, no matter how shallow.

9.Build responsibly in floodplains:

Construction within Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) zones require special permits. Learn more at  valleywater.org/floodready.
