Dear MCC,
Many years after Don Miguel Ruiz published the Four Agreements, he wrote a companion text to that series, called The Fifth Agreement. The fifth agreement is Be Skeptical, But Learn to Listen. This is the theme of this week’s worship service, as well as this week’s Bible study.
Ruiz says that being skeptical “is masterful because it uses the power of doubt to discern the truth.” We must be skeptical, especially of the negative messages we hear, whether that negativity comes from others or even from ourselves. The second part of the agreement is to learn to listen. When we learn to listen, we understand people on a deeper level, we come to know their stories, and this improves our communication.
This Sunday we will explore ways that our healthy skepticism and sacred listening can strengthen our spirits and our relationships with one another.
You are loved,
Rev. Jakob
