I was asked to share why the Whitin Community Center & Blackstone Valley Children's Place are so important to our family. Here is my story.
In our family of 4, my husband and I work full time and have very high demanding careers. I work as a Project Engineer for an Electrical Contractor, and my husband, Rob works as a Plant Manager. We are proud parents of two, our daughter Mia, and our son Jacob. Both children currently attend the Blackstone Valley Children's Place (BVCP).

"...the BVCP Director, was by far the most warm and welcoming woman I have ever met."
I was spoiled when my daughter was an infant, thankfully we had a very close family member who owned her own private daycare where our daughter could attend. Mia attended the family daycare until she was 3 years old, when I realized she needed more structure. Mia needed an environment that was not immediate family.
My husband and I started our journey looking at all the local daycare centers in town, it was so tedious and exhausting. There was always something that did not work for us with these other centers. They were either too expensive, not clean enough, the hours did not work, the programs were not impressive, or they felt more like glorified babysitters. I felt like time and time again, we were just another tuition payment when we walked in the doors and met with the Directors during our orientation.

I was about to give up, when my husband mentioned that the Whitin Community Center had a childcare program. We made an appointment and met with the BVCP Director, who was by far the most warm and welcoming woman I have ever met. We were able to explore the rooms, meet with the teachers and see the children currently enrolled, who looked extremely happy and entertained. We loved that BVCP had experienced teachers that had been teaching there for many years. The structure of the program for our child’s day was all typed up and handed to us the day of our orientation, and tuition was very competitive based on what we had already experienced. I loved that they also allowed the children swim time, and really dialed in on creative play.

"She and I were so sad on her last day, we cried. Our daughter made such a connection with the teachers at BVCP..."
Mia started BVCP when she was 3 years old and stayed until she started Kindergarten. She and I were so sad on her last day, we cried. Our daughter made such a connection with the teachers at BVCP through the Preschool program all the way up to the Pre-K. It was no surprise that when we found out that we were going to have our second child in 2014, we knew exactly the plan for him the moment that he turned 2 years old 9 months. Jacob is now 6 and Mia is now 8 and BVCP has become a second home to us.

We cannot say enough amazing things about BVCP. It is a breath of fresh air to know that you are leaving your children with staff that truly cares about your children as though they are their own. We have continued our relationship and had both children enrolled in the full time program during the pandemic and we will continue to send them both to the After School program when life goes back to normal.

To say that the staff is impressive, is an understatement, especially during these unprecedented times. Our daughter has special educational needs and at times can be a handful, but the staff works with her and never give up on her! Knowing that our children are being supported, cared for and kept safe makes a parent like me, feel good and at ease.

Thank you BVCP for all that you do, I wish there were more centers like you and the staff that you have!

If you have the capacity, please consider making a gift to the Whitin Community Center, so we can continue to give parents peace of mind when their children are in our care, and support the health & well-being for all ages and backgrounds in the Blackstone Valley.
