Eating Healthy on a College Budget

A college budget shouldn't stand in the way of you and nutritious/consistent eating habits. Here are some tips for extending your budget, improving your eating habits, and enjoying your eating experience:

  • Start by creating a monthly food budget. Create separate budgets for take-out and home-prepared meals. Tip: If you're not sure where to start, review your previous month's spending as a starting point.
  • Find easy recipes (of foods you like!) with common ingredients to make during the week.
  • Buy low-cost proteins like eggs, tuna, chickpeas, and lentils.
  • If you can, buy food in bulk and share costs with roommates.
  • Try no-cook recipes or make your own protein boxes.
  • If your produce often expires before you use it, try buying frozen vegetables instead of fresh ones.
  • Try the UHS nutrition team's $50/week menu for omnivores and/or menu for vegetarians.
  • Take a free cooking class to help build your skills or the NST 20 course.
  • Reach out to our nutritionists for a free 15-minute consultation so they can help you!

Resources:

  • Cal Fresh - a nutrition program that helps you buy healthy foods. Cal Grant or Work-Study required. Students with meal plans are not eligible.
  • Food Assistance Program - a need-based funding program provided to students ineligible for CalFresh.
  • UC Berkeley Food Pantry - a food resource for students short on money and/or access to nutritious foods.
  • Bears for Financial Success - a great resource for students if you have never made a personal spending plan or would like assistance managing your current budget.

Don't forget to review your SHIP Benefits!

SHIP 2022-23 coverage started on August 1. Students with SHIP receive medical, counseling, and prescription coverage through Wellfleet Student, vision through VSP, and dental services through MetLife. Wellfleet utilizes the Blue Shield of CA PPO provider network for services in California and Cigna PPO for services outside of California. Review your SHIP benefits and sample fees. You can also access your benefits through the Berkeley SHIP Mobile app. Both Apple and Android users can access many of the features available on MySHIP Online.

If you have any questions, you can contact the SHIP office via the eTang patient portal or by emailing ship@berkeley.edu.

And remember, all students have access to services at UHS regardless of insurance.
