A STORY OF HEALING AND GENEROSITY

There's still time to help us reach our year-end fundraising goal to support youth impacted by incarceration--young people like Valeria...

Valeria is one of more than 1,000 teens who are treasured student members and graduates of POPS the Club.

Back in 2015, Valeria’s fears surrounding her family’s struggles with immigration drew her to a POPS club. In that nurturing space, she experienced transformation.

Before joining POPS, Valeria hid her anguish from everyone—teachers, friends, peers, counselors. POPS helped her understand she was not alone and empowered her to share her story. She discovered that her personal story is part of her strength.

It is estimated that more than 10 million children have experienced parental incarceration at some time in their life. These kids face unique difficulties. In addition to the trauma of separation, behavioral consequences can be severe. And yet these young people often fall through the cracks.

POPS the Club was founded in 2013 to provide support, hope and dignity for this too-often ignored population.

Valeria stayed connected to POPS after graduation and now works as POPS’ Volunteer Coordinator, while also taking college courses and with a second job.

One day at her second job, a customer offered Valeria a tip, She invited him instead to consider a donation to POPS, He made an extraordinarily generous donation.

It was second nature for Valeria to share about the critical impact POPS has had on her life, because she knows that those who have participated in POPS have experienced reduced anxiety, an increased desire to graduate and go on to college. They have left behind gang associations, traded violence for artistic expression and experience an overall optimism about life they did not have before joining POPS the Club.

This holiday season we are working to raise $50,000 to support POPS clubs at four more schools in 2020 .
