It's almost the Fourth of July, a holiday that brings people outside to enjoy the San Joaquin River Parkway.
It’s important to consider how you can protect yourself and the Parkway’s natural resources when planning your visit.
Fire Safety
We all have a role to play in preventing wildfires. Show your support for the San Joaquin River Parkway by being fire safe this season.
Here are 4 ways you can help prevent wildfires:
- Leave your barbeques and grills at home.
- Keep fireworks far away from wildlands. Better yet, enjoy a professional fireworks show rather than hosting your own.
- If you smoke, extinguish your cigarette completely before disposal. Consider putting the cigarette butt in your pocket; you'll be sure it's completely out before you do.
- Be cautious about where you drive and park your vehicle. Hot exhaust pipes can easily ignite dry grass, and you might not notice until it's too late.

Water Safety
When it's hot outside, the San Joaquin River is an inviting place for cooling off. We want you to stay safe when wading or swimming in the river.
Here are 4 water safety tips you can use today:
- Wear a Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device or life jacket. It's one of the most essential things you can do to prevent water-related injuries and drownings.
- Become knowledgeable about the water environment. Look for potential hazards such as changes in water depth, currents, and obstructions.
- Swim and wade with a buddy, never go alone.
- Be aware that there are no lifeguards on duty at public access locations along the Parkway.
