ST. VINCENT DE PAUL MINISTRY | |
Thank you so much for your generous donations of food and gift cards to our St Vincent de Paul Christmas Baskets for our neighbors in need this Christmas. The request for Christmas baskets exceeded our supply, so we are in great need of donations to resupply our food pantry. If you are able to help by donating either financially through our website sjvkirkland.org/outreach/#st-vincent-de-paul, or by donating non-perishable food to help us re-stock the pantry, we would be extremely grateful. We couldn’t do this without you! Special thanks to those who volunteer for this ministry. If you are interested in volunteering with our St Vincent de Paul Chapter in service for our neighbors in need, please contact Susan at the SJV office.
Thanks also to the Knights of Columbus for donating Coats for Kids to provided warm winter coats to children in need.

START THE NEW YEAR WITH MARY
Mass on Monday, January 1 at 9:00am
| On January 1, the Church celebrates one of the most important feast days of the Catholic liturgical year: the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. The Church puts the feast of this solemnity on the first day of the new year to emphasize the importance of Mary’s role in the life of Christ and of the Church. We commemorate the various saints on the different days of the year, but Mary is the most prominent of them all. She has a special role and mission given to her by God. As Mother of our Redeemer and of the redeemed, she reigns as the Queen at the side of Christ the King. She is a powerful intercessor for all of our needs here on earth. | |

| |

Following the Amen of the Eucharistic Prayer, we enter into the fourth part of the Mass, the Communion Rite. We have gathered in Christ's name, we have listened to Christ's word; Christ's saving action has been remembered and renewed in the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Now we come to the high point of our participation, the reception of the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion.
The Communion Rite begins with the recitation of the Lord's Prayer, We pray the prayer of Jesus himself: a prayer that praises God, that seeks only daily bread —and that makes a bargain: "Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us" Before we come to the altar, we seek forgiveness and reconciliation. The Lord's Prayer flows naturally into the exchange of peace, In this holy moment, we turn to those who are already one with us in the Body of Christ, and share-not a mere greeting or "good morning"-but the peace of Christ, which flows through his living Body, the Church,
The "breaking of the bread" was one of the most ancient names for the Eucharist. It was in the breaking of bread that the disciples on the road to Emmaus finally recognized that their companion was Jesus himself. In the Mass, the host is broken and divided as we pray to Christ as the Lamb of God. During this rite, known as the fraction, we say or sing an ancient hymn. We acknowledge Christ as the one who takes away the sins "of the world," and we ask for mercy. The Savior of all comes to each of us individually, and to the whole world.
In our Catholic tradition, the Eucharistic species, the bread and wine, are not brought to us or passed through the pews. Instead, we move towards the altar in procession. Communion isn't something that happens to us. Communion is something we assent to; something we do. The host can be received in the hand or on the tongue. Receiving in the hand is the more ancient practice; receiving on the tongue became common, and then mandatory, in the Middle Ages. The measure of our devotion is not, of course, in whether we open our hands or our mouth to receive, but whether we open our hearts to Christ and to those with whom we share this life.
We speak of "receiving communion." But when we receive the Body and Blood of Christ, we become one with Christ and with all the others who are joined to him in this sacrament. "As grain, once scattered on the hillsides, was in this broken bread made one," says an ancient hymn, "so from all lands thy Church be gathered into thy kingdom by thy Son." Communion means communion with this community, these people. The Body of Christ is not a thing. It is a living reality. The sacrament we receive is a sacrament of unity.

“Healing can begin after we admit that we cannot fix ourselves. We need to say yes to our powerlessness and allow ourselves to be held by the only One who can heal us.”
- Kathryn J. Hermes, FSP, “Surviving Depression”
Are you tired of running away from being held by the One who can heal you? It can be hard to admit we cannot do it on our own. That first step can mean everything. Allow people who have been there too to walk with you on a Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat™. You won’t be sorry you gave it a try.
