"Every October it becomes important, no, necessary
to see the leaves turning, to be surrounded
by leaves turning; it's not just the symbolism,
to confront in the death of the year your death,
one blazing farewell appearance, though the irony
isn't lost on you that nature is most seductive
when it's about to die, flaunting the dazzle of its
incipient exit, an ending that at least so far
the effects of human progress (pollution, acid rain)
have not yet frightened you enough to make you believe
is real; that is, you know this ending is a deception
because of course nature is always renewing itself—
the trees don't die, they just pretend,
go out in style, and return in style: a new style...."

Historical Tidbit: Monponsett Inn Fire (Taken from the Silver Lake News, Feb 1, 1968)
|
In 1866, Mortiz and Theresa Schindler began taking paying guests in the farm house situated in a particularly lovely shore of West Monponsett Lake, and overlooking East Monponsett Lake as well. Their early guests were principally hunters, who took quite a complicated route to the rather remote lake where they maintained a duck blind. They took the train to the Holmes Street railroad station, horse and carriage to East Lake, then were rowed across the lake to the Schindler property.
The beauty of the setting and improvement in transportation for reaching it created a greater demand, and Moritz Schindler began adding further rooms to the farm house. At the turn of the century it was a flourishing and popular summer family hotel.
In 1905 this structure burned, and was immediately replaced by the larger building which has become such a familiar landmark. Mortiz Schindler lived only a few years after its completion, but the business was carried on by his son Robert and Robert's wife, Mary J. Schindler.
As the years passed the business changed in nature, for families no longer spent their vacations at summer hotels. The Monponsett Inn, a scene of functions, dinners and outings began to appear. By the time Robert Schindler died in 1953, the change was almost complete.
The third generation in the family was Robert's son Maurice, who with his mother continued to run it until it was sold in 1963 to Philip Shannon and Robert Clairmont.
They undertook extensive renovations to the inn. One of them was the enclosure of the wide and rambling porch on the southeast side into a dining and function room. The change in function was almost complete. Shannon later withdrew from the venture, and Clairmont built a large extension to the inn on the west side, installing air conditioning as well.
The Clairmonts, however, continued the resident owner-manager custom. They occupied rooms on the second floor.
Whatever the future, the hotel as such will not return. What use will be made of the land remains to be seen. The beach and grove are still there. So is the "pavilion," a one room building adjacent to the main building often used for summer dances or banquets.

"Do not dwell in the past,
do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment." ~ Buddha
"I have great respect for the past. If you don't know where you've come from, you don't know where you're going. I have respect for the past, but I'm a person of the moment. I'm here, and I do my best to be completely centered at the place I'm at, then I go forward to the next place."
~ Maya Angelou
"If you want the present to be different from the past, study the past." ~ Baruch Spinoza
You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space." ~ Johnny Cash
|
Rafiki: "It doesn't matter, it's in the past."
Adult Simba: "Yeah, but it still hurts."
Rafiki: "Oh yes, the past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it, or learn from it."
~ Lion King
We need to deal with our past pain to let go of it. Otherwise the pain just rears its ugly head one way or another; showing up in the worst places... in anxiety attacks and quick judgements.
Be at peace. Face it; mourn it; to forgive.
You may never understand, but don't let the story someone else wrote be yours. Be the hero of your own story.
~ Jacquie
