"Be well." That's both our greeting and our goodbye these days. I sincerely hope that all of you and your family and friends are doing well. Make sure to use zoom and Facetime at least once a day!
I have debated sending out more regular updates during these trying times. Things change daily and, all too often, hourly. Please consider this a highlight of critical information. I update my social media several times a day

WAYS TO HELP
IF YOU NEED ASSISTANCE
We have seen a massive increase in people who are unemployed or under-employed due to covid. Louisiana has received about 100,000 new applications for unemployment since this began, so please be patient. The process is slow but it is moving. There are also many groups that are assisting with food and grants. Here are a few links to start:

please be patient! The increase in applications is astronomical. LA Workforce has hired hundreds of new employees, increased servers, and extended hours to seven days a week. The need is great.
RENTAL ASSISTANCE
. T
he city is offering assistance of up to $750 for those needing rental assistance. Call (504) 658-4200 to apply. Preference given to families with children and low income workers.

THE LOUISIANA LEGISLATURE
The state legislature adjourned on Monday March 16; was in session very briefly on Tuesday March 31; and has now adjourned indefinitely. The 2020 session technically ends on June 1; however, I think it's possible that we will convene a special session(s) this year, likely after the epidemic has (hopefully) calmed in the state, to deal with emergency and covid-related issues. Governor Edwards has used
emergency orders
to assist the state in moving through the epidemic. The legislature will likely expand and/or weigh in on many of these issues in the near future.
We do not yet know what the rest of session or an emergency session may look like. In the meantime, there is a strong, energetic group of organizations that is working to make sure that expanded vote by mail is given a priority when we return. Earlier this year, I introduced
HB 419
,
in collaboration with
Power Coalition
,
Fair Districts LA
,
and now,
Louisiana Vote by Mail
.
Expanding vote by mail was already a great idea, but it has now become critical during this time of public health concerns and increasing
cyber attacks
.
If you'd like to be more involved in this effort, contact Louisiana Vote by Mail

they've been busy.
