RE-FORMING OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD, WITH THE EARTH, & WITH EACH OTHER
Peace to you,

Autumn is in the air here in the Village! Thanks to our dedicated Work Week volunteers for cleaning, doing repairs, chaining firewood, and more to prepare the Village for winter. The community has transitioned to using fewer buildings to conserve heat and energy. Villagers now gather for cozy, candlelit Vespers in Koinonia Fireside until late spring. This past month, the Village celebrated Hobbit Day with themed meals, trivia, games, and movie watching. Several Villagers went to Stehekin to pick apples at the Harvest Festival. The Village also welcomed groups of middle school students from Manson and Chelan for outdoor education programs.

We hope you enjoy these stories and images from the past month at Holden!

OPERATIONS
Reforming our relationship with each other and with the Earth includes Holden’s goal of reducing the Village’s carbon footprint. The utilities team began work this past month towards the long-term goal of eliminating the diesel boiler in the Hotel. The team dug a ditch to connect the Hotel with the boiler that heats Lodges 1 and 6, which has some extra capacity to heat the Hotel in less cold parts of the winter. This will reduce the amount of time the Hotel runs on the diesel boiler. Future phases of this project include replacing the boiler in Lodge 6 with a more efficient and reliable unit, to take more load off of the Hotel diesel heater, and adding a small boiler and some wood storage in Lodge 1 to make up the remaining needed capacity. The diesel boiler in the Hotel can then be removed. The project should pay for itself in 10-12 years with current fuel prices, and will result in a more reliable heating system for those 3 buildings.

SEEKING ARTIST RESIDENCY APPLICATIONS
Holden Village is dedicated to giving professional artists the time and space to focus on their art. Holden provides living space, studio space, and all meals. As an artist-in-residence, you will become part of Holden’s dynamic winter community: participating in the common work of the Village; sharing your vision and creativity; and interacting with staff and guests. Artists working in all media are welcome to apply. Applications are due December 1, 2019 for the residency, which takes place February 21 – April 3, 2020.

Holden has completed the transition to winter mode, thoroughly cleaning the Village after a busy summer season and closing off certain buildings to conserve energy during the cold months. Thank you to everyone who volunteered during two Work Weeks this October. We had a record number of people participate since re-opening the Village in 2017 after mine remediation. From chaining firewood to mending quilts to cleaning out freezers to scrubbing floors, and more, winter in the Village would not be possible without the enthusiastic participation and generous support of volunteers!
SUPPORT HOLDEN VILLAGE
YOUR ONGOING STEWARDSHIP SUSTAINS THIS PLACE OF EDUCATION AND RENEWAL FOR ALL PEOPLE
This summer, Holden was again filled with the spirit that has carried this place apart for decades. Music, laughter, and community filled the Village, as well as thought-provoking conversations led by renowned teaching faculty from around the world, joined in the spirit of Unity of Love. It is our hope that Holden Village may continue as a place for civil conversation, for learning to listen deeply to one another, and for finding hope in our world. As we move forward, we face a number of challenges. Now, more than 80 years after their construction, the buildings that have held thousands of Villagers need your help so that they can continue to support the rhythms of this place. Fire safety and continued maintenance of structural safety remain a top priority and plans are in place to complete a number of safety upgrades. But we can’t do this without your continued support, whether that be financial gifts or the gift of your time and skills as a volunteer . We need your support to complete these projects and ensure that the Holden Village remains a safe place for all to gather in conversation and community! www.holdenvillage.org/donate

And we bless each other
That the beauty of this world
And the love that created it

And be a blessing to others
Now and always
Amen.
