RE-FORMING OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE EARTH, WITH GOD, & WITH EACH OTHER

Peace to you,
It’s summer in the Railroad Creek Valley.
Our conversations this summer revolve around
Fear Not
. We remain deeply engaged with the essential issues of human life—the places where real conversation can happen, even between people who think and feel differently. Our teaching faculty are moving us with conversations that wake us up, and, in the words of one poet, call us to the needs of this world.
This summer, we welcome you to the new look of
BeHolden
. It is our hope that
BeHolden
can continue to connect you to the Village and share the stories and rhythms of this community with you in the wider Holden community through voices and images from the Village.
Holden stands witness to grace in the world, through which goodness and truth can be revealed.
With good courage,
Chuck + Peg

ARTS
FROM HARVEST TO SPOON
Village Artist Sam Gathje spent the past several weeks teaching wood carving, demonstrating how to use a carving axe, and bringing dull tools back to life with his sharpening skills. With Sam’s guidance, Villagers of all ages carved their own spoons, butter spreaders, hooks, and hangers from alder brush found in an avalanche chute near the Village. Take a look at the journey from harvest to spoon!

HOLDEN TRANSPORT GETS
A FRESH COAT
Holden’s school buses received a fresh coat of paint, with repainted bus names and
Holden Village
beautifully lettered by Bellingham calligraphy artist Laura Norton. A few new names were given, including North Star, named after North Star Mountain, and Entiat and Silver City, named in honor of the two main hotshot crews that protected the Village during the
2015 Wolverine Fire
. The fleet is ready to welcome hundreds of Villagers each week!

ENVIRONMENTAL ED
NEW SPOT FOR THE HIKE HAUS
The Hike Haus has moved! Starting this summer, hiking gear, maps, and sessions with the Village Naturalist will be held in the new Hike Haus, which is now known as
the Cabin
. Formerly a diesel shed near the Footbridge, the Cabin allows for more gear storage as well as indoor and outdoor space for classes and discussions. Over the winter, the space was renovated by volunteers, allowing Holden to open it to guests this spring! Stop by for the 10 essentials before your next hike!

OUR FOOD MISSION
HOLDEN KITCHEN (RE)CONNECTS WITH LOCAL GROWERS
This month marks a year and a half that the Holden Kitchen has been reopened after Rio Tinto’s food service provider, ESS, prepared meals for the Village during mine remediation.
Over the past year and a half, Holden has increasingly sourced food locally whenever possible. Currently, a variety of local food producers provide grain, eggs, fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, and fair-trade coffee for the Village. We are proud to partner with these farms to serve fresh, delicious food in the Dining Hall.

GARBOLOGY
As a remote wilderness community, Holden has waste management down to a science (we call it "garbology"). However, due to the recent elimination of glass recycling in Chelan, we are no longer able to process glass in the Village.
We ask that guests bringing beverages into the Village opt for plastic or aluminum containers or plan to take glass with you at the end of your stay to recycle downlake.
Thank you for helping us minimize our negative impact on the environment!

A VILLAGE RENEWED
SUPPORT HOLDEN THROUGH ANOTHER VIBRANT SUMMER
The summer guest season has begun, bringing Villagers to this place of education and renewal from around the globe. The weeks ahead will bring a robust lineup of renowned teaching faculty for sessions around the 2018 Summer Conversation
Fear Not
, vibrant worship, Narnia programming, and more. But we still need your help. Registration fees do not fully cover the cost of maintaining a Village community of learning, worship, hospitality, and celebration.
Help us ensure that Holden's rhythms remain for generations to come!

BLESSING
God, for daily bread, we give thanks. To those who have bread, give hunger for justice,
and to those who hunger, give bread. Amen.
