Beach Directors, Promoters and Coaches,

My name is Patty Dodd, Director of MBsand Club and Dodd Volleyball School in Manhattan Beach, California. I have first and foremost always been an educator. After playing volleyball and graduating from UCLA, I taught both Kindergarten and Spanish for 20 years. Teaching taught me the importance of classroom and environment management. It shaped my coaching style and philosophy. It’s important to have a coaching philosophy that can evolve as you learn from your players and peers.

When I started MBsand 6 years ago, my goals and aspirations for my students can probably be best explained by our club acronym which is on the White Board every day of practice:

M- istakes are necessary
B- etter the ball, better your partner, better yourself
S- upportive partner
A- dapt, attention to detail
N- etwork
D- o the drill, know the drill

Our philosophy at MBsand beach volleyball club is to teach fundamentals correctly in a positive environment that will foster growth and love for beach volleyball. Girls and boys 10-17 yrs-old learn the fundamentals and learn to think for themselves. Our kids strive to not only be the best players they can, but to be the best partners as well. We embrace a growth mindset culture within the club, our feedback is directed at the process, our effort, work ethic and determination. We have fun and make life long friends.

I’m humbled and honored to be a Beach Nation Founder, the educational partner of the JVA, AVP, AVCA and Starlings. I have worked with the USA National team, HP and NTDP since 2012. I learn every time I teach, share and collaborate. Hope to see you at a Beach Nation Event!

Running a Beach League: Where to Begin?

As more volleyball clubs are owning and leasing facilities, Club Directors are realizing the demand for indoor and/or outdoor sand courts. During off-peak times when your teams are not practicing on the sand courts or your club is not hosting a beach tournament, running a beach league is the perfect way to increase the bottom line, while bringing new customers to your facility. Here are some ways to get started.

Warm-up drill that will elevate your beach game

Having a great warm-up routine is an important step toward being a successful beach athlete and competitor, because
(1) it allows an athlete to be best prepared to play
(2) use practice time to focus on playing better and getting better rather than warming up.
(3) helps reduce injuries.

Watch Nick Lucena and Phil Dalhausser, USA Olympians and one of the best teams in the world, working on a Beach Nation warm up drill called 3 ball juggle drill.
