Beach Renourishment Project Update

Project Update: June 9, 2022

Project Overview and Benefits:

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has begun a beach renourishment project in the vicinity of Allison and Indian Beach Park.

Continental Heavy Civil (CHC) has been awarded the contract to complete this project. Beach renourishment protects against hurricane storm surges, rising sea levels and widens our beaches. The city is working closely with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and residents to ensure a smooth operation of the project.

What's Happening:

The contractor has begun its staging operations in the northern portion of Indian Beach Park, which is inaccessible to the public. Sand placement will begin on the south section of the segment at 44 street. Beachfront concession operations in this area have been notified that equipment must be removed from the beach.

The contractors will continue to use the spoil at 46 Street and Indian Beach Park for delivery and temporary storage of heavy equipment necessary for sand placement. Equipment will continue to be driven to the Allison Park staging area via the beachfront emergency vehicle lane.

In addition to weekdays, the contractors have the authorization to work weekends, and our team will advise of the dates when weekend work is expected.

What to Expect

  • The staging area at Indian Beach Park is being used to house office trailers, generators, roll-off containers, and other construction equipment or materials.
  • Work in the staging area may occur from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Work on the beach may commence at 7 a.m. or sunrise (whichever is later) and conclude at 7 p.m. or sunset (whichever is earlier). The contractor will work weekdays and weekends as needed.
  • A portion of the Beachwalk pavers adjacent to Indian Beach Park will be removed to allow for the delivery of sand to the beach. Pedestrian checkpoints will be in place.
  • Moderate levels of construction noise can be expected during the day.
  • Construction equipment, machinery and workers will be present in the work zone.
  • Sections of the beach undergoing active construction will be closed to ensure public safety.
  • No Parking restrictions will be in place at Allison Park and Indian Beach Park.
  • Lifeguard towers will be temporarily relocated to allow for sand placement.
