Great Opportunity for Teens!
Creating Comic Characters
with Graphic Novel Artist,
Deb Lucke
Thursday, June 7th, 3:30-5pm
Register today!

A character in a comic, book, or movie is just like you and me EXCEPT...
maybe he travels to other lands through the back of a closet or she has to make a choice that affects the fate of humanity. The best characters have personalities we can relate to, but their circumstances are extraordinary.

In this workshop, we'll work on how to create a character that is actually only a drawing or a few words on a page into something that feels alive. Deb Lucke will lead the workshop in fun exercises in how to invent heroes, villains, and stooges with personalities. Then, we'll explore how these characters might behave under pressure.

Scribbling and doodling is necessary.

This workshop is open to middle school and high school students. This class is free but registration is required as space is limited.

Join the Battle of the Books
High School team starts 6/19
Middle School team starts 6/28

HPL is currently recruiting students entering grades 6-9 in September of 2018 to participate in the 14th annual Middle School Battle of the Books, and students entering grades 9-12 to participate in the 3rd annual High School Battle of the Books. B.O.B. is a nationally recognized literature contest in which young people answer trivia questions based on specific books that they have read during the summer. It is designed to expose young people to good literature, new friendships, and build teamwork and good sportsmanship skills while enjoying friendly competition.

Students will participate in meetings, coaching activities, and practice Battles each week between the end of June and August. Middle School students will meet every Thursday from 5-7pm between June 28th and Aug. 30th. High School students will meet every Tuesday from 5-7pm between June 19th and Aug. 14th. The library will supply the books, team t-shirts, and pizza!

After practice battles with other libraries, each team will participate in the Regional Battle of the Books at Ulster Community College to play for the championship. The Beacon Bees were the Middle School champions in 2010, 2013, and 2015, and The Beacon Buzzers were the High School champions in 2017!
