"Liberty - What Does This Mean?"
Rev. Kevin Lawson

What does Liberty look like in today's social and political climate? As a people of liberal religious faith, where are we called to liberty and justice for all?
Rev. Kevin will be in the pulpit this morning to share reflections on
these and others aspects of our monthly theme for July - Liberty.

July 5, 2018

Well, it was a great day for a Parade and Beacon was well represented in the Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce 4th of July Community Parade. Thanks to everyone who came out to help with float build and decoration, those who rode and waved, and especially to those who walked and passed out over 2,000 pieces of candy! It was a sincere pleasure to walk the front of our entry with Andy Gould one of our longstanding members, as we shared carrying the Beacon Banner. How good it was to hear, however briefly, a bit of our Beacon story shared from the announcing booths, to remind our community that we have been here since 1958. The parade was a wonderful opportunity to share with the larger community as we are celebrating our 60th year in Flagstaff!

Thank you again to DRE Amy Huntereece and Carleton Sheppard for being my co-leads on creating and developing our participation in the parade. Thank you to Gary B. for the use of your trailer, truck, and building the PVC framework. Thank you for all those who came out to be a part of our time in the parade, Mark Alexander, lore dickey, Donna Engleson (for the sparkle and glitter!), Andy Gould, Amy and Hunter, Cassie Dakan, Dorothy Rissel, Donna and David Russell with granddaughter Kendall and family puppy Princess Peach, Chloe Webb and friend Ronan, Carleton Sheppard, and Dennis Spurlin.

Grateful to be on the journey with you,
Rev. Kevin

Repair, Expand and Improve (REI) Listening Circles
There is still a chance to join a listening circle. The Board and the Building Team seek to know your concerns regarding the building project. Two listening circles are scheduled for July 09 from 4:00-5:30 pm and July 12 from 6:30-8:00 pm.

The following questions will be addressed. What is your vision for Beacon as a whole and you personally? What would that vision look like from a building or facility perspective? What are your specific concerns regarding the proposed REI project?

Contact me, Lynda, if you are interested: (712) 790-0423 or  ldorwei@gmail.com.

~ Special Event: Yoga Immersion, Week of July 9th ~

Five Day Yoga Immersion
July 9-13, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, Monday to Friday

Yoga is an expansive, ancient practice that unifies mind, body, and spirit.  Mindful awareness teaches us that there is no time like the present. Life is right now.  There is no gift like precious time devoted to that which brings joy and contentment.  Yoga practice is time spent mindfully, joyfully, contentedly.  It is called practice for a reason; it does require effort, not toward perfection, but toward growth, and self acceptance and understanding.

Five mornings of yoga immersion for beginners begins next  Monday July 9.  All are welcome, and sessions are by donation. Please come for a few days, or all week, and invite other friends and community members join.

Each week includes:
  • Beginning yoga with options offered for intermediate level practice, and alignment cues throughout.
  • Yoga philosophy based on the Eight Limbs of Classical Yoga
  • 90 mins of postures - reclined, seated, kneeling, standing
  • 30 mins of meditation, discussion
Children ages 10 an up are welcome, accompanied by an adult and all p articipants must sign a health waiver/release.  I am the primary instructor, but others may be invited for portions of classes.

What to bring:
  • Yoga mat
  • Thin, bath sized towel or yoga strap - used to assist stretching
  • Thin blanket that folds easily - to assist sitting or kneeling poses
  • Water bottle
  • Foam or wooden yoga block - to assist balancing and other poses (optional)
I look forward to seeing you. Any questions? Please email me

Peace and Namaste

~ Repair, Expand, & Improve Campaign News ~

We're so proud!!!
Did you know that we have  now  raised  over  $400,000 in our capital campaign?  WOW!  Beacon members and friends have demonstrated our love, dedication and generosity to  Repair, Expand and Improve   our building!

The congregation has clearly indicated a preference to proceed with an expansion plan that will not require a mortgage, and the Building Expansion Team (BET) has accordingly been working diligently to adjust plans to accommodate the funds that have been pledged to date.

Why Are We Doing This?
We have been hoping for a solution for  more program and social space since Rev. Wendy Williams was our minister in 2006 .  This Sunday, there will be a timeline available to the congregation illustrating the steps--over the past 12 years--that the congregation has approved to improve our facility. It has been a long, steady process, with an ongoing consensus to move ahead, and we are almost there!

The Building Expansion Team has listened carefully to the congregation's concerns about embarking on this project, and is conducting additional Listening Circles on  July 9 at 4:00 pm and July 12 at 6:30 pm. These events are being held to listen and gather your concerns about the project and Beacon's future. There will also be an Informational Meeting on July 22 after service, where members of the Board and BET will do a quick review of the building options and answer any final questions. These events are final opportunities for anyone to express thoughts and opinions to be addressed before the Congregational Meeting on  Sunday, July 29. ( If you cannot attend these meetings, please provide comment to Theresa deBoer, tadeboer@outlook.com,  for consideration by the committee.) At the  July 29th meeting, the Board will ask  us to vote on the preferred option that the BET will have recommended after their months of research and exploration, planning and cost-cutting.

Since last September, a large group of volunteers has met and worked tirelessly on many aspects of the project to reach this point in our process. Please acknowledge the efforts of the Building Expansion Team, who are striving to make our dreams come true:  Paul Black, Christina Boyd, Barry Brenneman, Skip Brimlow, Roz and Rich Clark, Preston Clocksin, Dan Davis, Theresa deBoer, Lynda Dorweiler, Andy Gould, Dora Harrison, Andy Hogg, Amy Huntereece, Kevin Lawson, Norm Lowe, Marsha Owen, Kevin Parkes, Carleton Sheppard, Dennis Spurlin, Dick Stockinger, Holly and Carl Taylor, Bill Towler, Anne Wittke, Steve Zeldes.

We had so much fun at camp this week!  We created a mural about water, sang the  UU Principle song  (click the link for video), played outside, and went on field trips every day!  We hope you will join us for the next Chalice Camp during Holiday break this winter!  Dates to be determined.

On Sunday we will continue learning about how to be good stewards of the Earth with water appreciation and conservation.  We are using the  Gather in Spirit  curriculum. This is a multigenerational program so anyone is welcome to join!

Beacon's community partner for July 2018 is Flagstaff Shelter Services (FSS). Established in 2006 by concerned citizens, business owners, and faith-based organizations, FSS provides critical shelter, food, and access to resources for Flagstaff's most vulnerable people. Regardless of faith, mental health or sobriety, the shelter serves any adult experiencing homelessness. In 2014, FSS became a year-round shelter serving those in need every night of the year, providing personal and behavioral crisis response, and helping clients move from crisis toward self-sufficiency.
