"Attitude of Gratitude"
With Rev. Kevin Lawson

It's been a trying year, a trying time beyond a year, and yet we persevere. This morning, Rev. Kevin reflects upon the spiritual effects of maintaining a practice of recognizing Gratitude. How we can offer Thanks giving beyond one day, one month in the year, but to recognize thanksgiving as a spiritual practice.

The next Building and Grounds workday is this Saturday, November 17 from 9:00 am to noon! Time to rake leaves & needles and clean the gutters (again!). Come get some free leaf mulch for your garden, and have fun fellowshipping with your religious community while doing some yardwork and cleaning. It's always fun and there's always food!
~ REI Project Update  ~

The Cottage is History!
Things are finally happening in our building project!  In the coming weeks, the work will continue on relocating our neighbor's gas line and capping off the sewer line.  Please be careful if you go into the backyard, and stay away from the construction areas.

~ Invitation from the Committee on Shared Ministry  ~

people_social_icons.jpg
In this month of gratitude, we wanted to share our joy that Christina Boyd and Maryann vanDrielen have joined our committee. They replace Dru Monroe and Collin Weller who have recently completed their terms; we warmly thank
them  for their service over the last two years.    Have you ever wondered why this committee is called the "Committee on Shared Ministry"? We have this  name because we are charged with assessing the overall health and well-being of Beacon and developing new initiatives to support our congregants, leaders, and minister.

We invite you to attend a "Listening Circle" so we can hear your views.  On Sunday, December 2, at 11:30, following the worship service, we will offer you an opportunity to participate in a small, moderated group discussion about your experiences at Beacon. Please come share your thoughts, aspirations, and concerns about any aspect of congregational life. Unlike the last set of listening circles which focused on our building plans, these circles provide an open forum for you to comment on any aspect of our church life, our governance, our Sunday Services, our Religious Exploration program, our ministers , our future plans, or any other aspect of your experiences at Beacon. Following the Sunday service, meet us in the sanctuary, and we will organize one or two groups of 8-10 members with a facilitator from our committee.   The sessions will run from 11:30 to 1:00. We will provide snacks.

Any comments that you share will remain anonymous and confidential. We will listen for common themes, ideas, and suggestions, and we will summarize them later in this newsletter, but we will not mention the speakers' names. We may also report some of the relevant, repeated themes and concerns at our congregational meeting in June 2019 and in our annual report to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowshipping Committee on Rev. Lawson's ministry at Beacon.

If you cannot attend on Sunday, we offer a second listening circle on Monday evening, December 3 starting at 5:30 in the Sanctuary at Beacon.

If you have questions or need childcare, please contact one of the members of COSM:  Nancy Paxton ( nancy.paxton@nau.edu), Mark James ( ndjames@aol.com), Maryann van Drielen ( mvandrielen@gmail.com), or Christina Boyd ( christinaboydaz@gmail.com).

~ Social Justice Allies (SJA) ~

wooden-color-people.jpg
Social Justice Allies will meet this Sunday, November 18, following the service (about 11:15, in the purple room). Agenda items will include a conversation about an online program we anticipate using as part of our developing approach to ensuring the safety of our congregants in the event of an emergency. We will also consider SJA goals that fit with Beacon Board of Trustees' goals for this church year. Beacon members, friends, and visitors are welcome to meet with us. Snacks will be provided.

For me, going on a Trailer Adventure--a privilege Rich and I share fairly routinely, especially during the winter months--offers an opportunity to relax, of course. In addition, time away from our usual in-town routines, helps put things in perspective. In the course of posting SJA articles the last few years in Beacon's Weekly E-news, as well as in our two Google Groups, a few of those submissions offer more than announcements and promos. I have updated one of my favorites, which I share with you here.

Full Spectrum Justice: It's What Beacon Does!
What IS "full spectrum justice"? Rev. Lisa McDaniel-Hutchings, Executive Director of UU Justice Arizona Network (UUJAZ), says, "We believe that working for justice grows out of our values as Unitarian Universalists." Full spectrum justice is ALL the ways we do that, through service, education, organizing, advocacy, witness, and philanthropy. Please click here to see just a few examples of the ways Beacon folks have worked-and continue to work-for social justice.

The next two weeks will be the culmination of our work with the curriculum called  Circle of Trees. It would be most beneficial to your child if you are able to attend BOTH weeks.  The workshops comprise an adaptation of the ritual "A Council of All Beings," presented by Joanna Macy, John Seed, Pat Fleming, and Arne Naess in the 1988 book  Thinking Like a Mountain: Toward a Council for All Beings

Find out more details about what is happening  for this coming Sunday in the Religious Exploration blog.

Please take a couple minutes  tell me what you love about Beacon?  This will help me plan and bring more of  what resonates with you and your family. Also I would love to hear about your dreams for the spiritual development of your children.  Tell me what you wish for.  This will also help me plan and bring more of  what makes you excited.
