Sermon

"Censorship and the Search for Truth Now"
Nancy Paxton
Every Sunday we affirm that "the search for truth" is our sacrament. This Sunday , we will consider some of the ways the UU's search for knowledge has been restricted by censorship in the 20th century, and then examine some of the new and confusing challenges we face in our search for truth now.

Sunday, November 24

Bring a Friend or Bring Back A Friend Sunday! Let's fill the sanctuary with new and old friends for our gratitude themed service on November 24 which will include a new member welcome. A festive Thanksgiving-themed potluck to follow. Please plan to bring a dish to share.
Chalice Circles
November 24 & 26

Touchstones Chalice Circles are designed to meet our needs for belonging (intimacy) and meaning (ultimacy) by building friendships and providing opportunities to ponder life's questions, small and large, with others who share the common values of our UU Principles.

Chalice Circle continues to meet on the 4th Sunday & Tuesday of each month. Discussion examines subjects as provided in the monthly journal of Unitarian Universalism,  Touchstones.
To meet the needs of the congregation, we have made attendance open.

For further information contact Char Tarashanti or Lynda L. Dorweiler at  ChaliceCircles@Beaconuu.com
Connect with Rev. Robin
First Sunday of the Month

On the first Sundays of the month, grab your coffee and come back into the Sanctuary to connect with Rev. Robin, talk about Beacon and your own journey.  See  you on December 1.

  Social Justice Allies (SJA)

Calendar alert!

The SJA meeting scheduled for this Sunday, November 10, has been cancelled.
The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, December 15, following the service.
In the meantime, I am in the process of visiting individually with SJA "regulars", gathering people's preferences for meeting day (of the week) and time (of day).
In addition to continuing with Sunday-after-service, other possibilities are Monday or Wednesday evening.

And, especially with the onset of election season, we have a rare opportunity:
On Saturday, November 23, 10-12 there will be a League of Women Voters Advocacy Training workshop in Camp Verde.
The Greater Verde Valley chapter of the LWV has developed an engaged membership; they have arranged for the state level LWV Advocacy Chair to facilitate this two-hour training. Sending even a small Beacon delegation to participate will prepare us for our non-partisan work-the League has a non-partisan requirement, too-in the months to come.
Please see the attached flyer. Let me know if you're interested; if so we can participate in a carpool. Feel free to respond to the person shown at the bottom of the flyer, and copy me.

In community and service,
Roz Clark, Interim SJA Chair

      November Share the Plate Partner

For October and November, Beacon UU is sharing the plate with Flagstaff Family Food Center. Serving around 63,000 daily meals per year in their location on N. Second Street, the Center also provides a children's reading room, delivers to the Flagstaff Shelter Services an evening meal for those who might be staying the night, and provides Back Door and Mobile Sack Lunches. They have a food rescue program from local grocery stores and distribute food no longer good for human consumption to local farms and ranches, so there is zero waste.

Undesignated contributions in this month's offerings above $350 will be presented to the Share The Plate partner. Nominations for 501c3 agencies can be made through a form located at the top of the stairs in the CAC folder, or contact Office@beaconuu.com
Our Caring Connections

Confidential Pastoral care is available to all members and friends, new and longstanding. Our Caring Circle works with our minister to offer support, practical assistance, and companionship. Please let us know (through our team, staff, musical or affinity groups) of needs for a listening ear and caring connections. Contact Rev. Robin or Dorothy Rissel at  dorothy.rissel@gmail.com

The congregation voted to authorize the Board to expend up to $22,500 from reserves and savings as required to complete the addition and renovation project.

We hope we won't need to exercise the authority you granted, but if we do, we plan to take extra steps to provide open access by the congregation to the Board's decision-making process. To that end, the agenda for each scheduled meeting of the Board of Trustees shall be posted for public view as it is being drafted. Updates to the agenda may occur up to the day of the meeting. Click here to see the agenda.

The Board will review the prioritization of any work that would require the funds authorized by the motion. Feel free to contact a Board member in writing with your concerns and suggestions. Attendance at Board meetings, as with all committee meetings, is open to all Beacon members.
