  Sermon
"Unitarian Universalism as Jazz: Freedom Within Form"
Rev. Robin Landerman Zucker
Jazz is a different drummer's kind of music and Unitarian Universalism is a different drummer's kind of religion. In fact, the parallels between the two are quite remarkable. Both have evolved from more strident and orthodox forms, and both have been shaped by numerous sources. More than anything, though, Jazz and UUism are each deeply personal, in that they ask the participant to seek and create with both freedom and integrity within a fixed but flexible framework. This morning, we'll explore how UUism is a "jazz religion," with special music and readings that syncopate with the theme.

Social Justice Allies (SJA)

Report on last week's (10/13) SJA meeting
In the spirit of transitions that envelope Beacon these days, it seems promising to SJA's interim chair (guess who? J ) to examine Beacon's social justice efforts. To that end,
Rev. Robin, Rich Clark and Roz Clark launched a conversation that addressed these two questions:
  1. (Thinking BIG PICTURE...) What would your productive social justice effort "look-like/sound-like/feel-like?", and
  2. (Thinking PROCESS...) What are some promising small steps we might take that would move us toward some of those Big-Picture outcomes?
So, Big-Picture thoughts (in no particular order)...
Collaborative, intersectional, interfaith, inspirational, invitational/finger-waving not allowed, flexible, mobilizing, authentic, energizing, balancing freedom and form, encouraging
And, small steps in those directions (again, in no particular order)...
            Change SJA meeting day (of the week) and time; initiate political "post-carding";
collaborate with League of Women Voters, initiate alternative gift market; re-structure SJA committee; continue collections/donations; "wayside pulpit"; tiny pantries; banner; make this (exercise) an on-going process.

We will continue this process in our next SJA meeting: Sunday, November 10, following the service (about 11:15). Beacon members, friends and visitors are always welcome!

REI Building Project Update

 * Important Date *
Nov 3 after the service: Celebration of our new spaces!

Thank you to all who have been working on the planning and execution of the next phase of our project. This past week, we have been helping Norm Lowe build the office furniture, we've been caulking and painting trim in the two new rooms, working on the backyard flood control and electrical, receiving a wonderful donation of flagstones (very heavy work!), and a lot of other minor things. In the meantime, we've had city inspectors from different departments coming by to look and sign off their part of the inspection. This caused a little more work on our part, in order to meet their standard for dark sky lighting and backyard drainage.

We still have more inspections due, so I want to remind everyone that we are not allowed to use the new rooms until the city issues a certificate of occupancy. This ought to happen by next week, barring any major issues.
As we continue to work on our Beacon projects, we could use more help to get these projects completed.

There are a lot of things going on, such as installing the dishwasher in the new kitchen. Any help would be appreciated!

Building and Grounds Thanks You!

We had a great clean-up day last Sunday. We haven't had a B&G day since last spring, due to the construction getting in the way. We were only focused on the front yard and some interior cleaning, but what a difference it made! Looks great!

Thank you to Gus, Dennis, Becky, Linda Ochi and her kids Alana and Nicolette, Joanne, Kevin, Dora, Mary, and Terry!

      October  & November Share the Plate Partner

For October and November, Beacon UU is sharing the plate with Flagstaff Family Food Center. Serving around 63,000 daily meals per year in their location on N. Second Street, the Center also provides a children's reading room, delivers to the Flagstaff Shelter Services an evening meal for those who might be staying the night, and provides Back Door and Mobile Sack Lunches. They have a food rescue program from local grocery stores and distribute food no longer good for human consumption to local farms and ranches, so there is zero waste.

Undesignated contributions in this month's offerings above $350 will be presented to the Share The Plate partner. Nominations for 501c3 agencies can be made through a form located at the top of the stairs in the CAC folder, or contact Office@beaconuu.com
