  Sermon
"Thank You For Being Such A Pain: Spiritual Lessons We Learn From Difficult People"
Rev. Robin Landerman Zucker
Whether we enjoy it or not, we learn valuable spiritual lessons from the difficult people in our lives - those whom we know and love, those we work with, attend church with, and those whom we encounter more randomly. This morning, we will explore the inherent presence of the "prickly" in our midst, how to discern whether we are, in fact, the "difficult" one for others, and how release, self regulation, and healthy congregational boundaries can be transformative for individuals and the communities they inhabit.

Joys and Concerns
From Sunday, September 29, 2019

Anne W. - She is having cataract and retinal surgeries; she may not be able to live in/return to Flagstaff for a while.
Charlie K. - Was given gallery molding by Marty M.; installed by Dan D., Bill O., and Norm L.
Holly T. - The Taylor's daughter is getting married next Sunday & it is a joy!
Bill S. - Shared his joy that daughter Sedona is a two year survivor of leukemia.
Sharon & David M. - Shared that this is their last Sunday here until next May; they have loved the summer here.
Robin's Bird's-Eye View

The venerable Hood dairy company of Boston launched an ad campaign some years ago that truly cracked me up. It featured the HoodAnswerMom. Picture her: blonde, pert, perpetually calm, presumably has great bone density, and is wise on all things dairy! This tickles my funny bone for a couple reasons. One: The whole unlikely notion that folks are panting to call, e-mail, or text a Dairy Doyenne; and two, the universal and not totally erroneous assumption that Moms know all the answers (as in, "Mom, where is my Social Studies homework!?")
Of course, as UUs, we've grown accustomed to asking lots of bold and curious questions (Is there an afterlife? What is truth? Who's hosting coffee hour next Sunday?), and we're not expecting an AnswerMom or an AnswerGod or an AnswerRev to clear it all up for us. "The answer is to question" as we often say.
Whenever I begin a new ministry, I gently inform my congregants that I may not be the UUAnswerRev with an easy "fix" to all of their queries and quandaries, but I will show up to question with them, listen to them, brainstorm and hash it out, sit in supportive silence, generate ideas, support theirs, and be a companion on the journey. Please reach out to me at minister@beaconuu.com or 978-505-7245 (confidential talk or text).
Ministry is mutual questing and it can be a nourishing journey. For instance, did you know that a scoop of chocolate ice cream has as much calcium as an 8 oz. glass of skim milk? It's true, and a whole lot better for your soul, if you ask me.

Take that, AnswerMom!
In faith,
Rev. Robin
A Message from the Music Director

Hello Congregation!

My name is Gabriel Hernandez and I have served as your Music Director for almost a year now! Thank you for the joy and safety I have found in this community. You have all had a hand in helping me finish up my Vocal Performance degree this semester and I am happy to say that I will be graduating in December! I will continue on as your music director until July as I continue to work and save money for the next adventure.

Music making is a passion of mine, and I have been loving the opportunity to work with some of you in the choir. Right now, we have about 13 members, but I am greedy and looking for more people to join! You do not need to have past experience singing, or being in a choir; I facilitate a community of people who come together to make a joyful noise and spread love and light through music to our congregation, and I would love if you were a part of that (especially if you sing low like a tenor or bass)! If you are interested in joining the choir please contact me through email at  Music@beaconuu.com . We can set up a time to meet and I can get to know you and your voice a little bit! I am looking forward to hearing from you all!

Rehearsal and Upcoming Performance info:
  • Rehearsals at Beacon- Every Thursday 7-8:30 p.m.
  • Oct. 20 th - Choir will perform in the Jazz service.
  • Nov. 3 rd - Choir will celebrate  Dia  de los Muertos.
  • Nov. 24 th - Choir will sing of gratitude and giving.
  • Dec. 8 th  - Winter appreciation service.
  • Dec. 24 th - Choir will provide music for the Christmas Eve services.

REI Building Project Update

This week the flooring is going into the new spaces, the new furnace installation will be completed, and some electrical and alarm system work will be going on. The next couple of weeks will be minor items that need to be completed by the contractor, and inspections by the city.

As things begin wrapping up for the construction phase of our project, we will be starting a number of small projects that will be completed by Beacon members. But in the meantime, we are planning a gathering to celebrate our new and improved spaces! Sunday, Nov 3, after the service, we'll enjoy some cake and snacks in our new kitchen!

Join us at 10:00 AM in Worship for All ages!

What were the numbers last week? Total = 48!

Coming up:
  • Monday October 7, 6:45-8:00: Esoteric book club, book is Anthroposophy in Everyday Life by Rudolf Steiner. Meeting location upstairs at Beacon. For more information about this group, contact Amy Huntereece: re@beaconuu.com
  • Tuesday October 8: TED talks. Join us at 10:00-11:00. This month's talk is by Ivan Krastev. It seems the more we know about how democracy works -- through government transparency, better media coverage, even new insights about our brains -- the less we trust democracy itself. Yet it's still, arguably, the best system of government available. As Ivan Krastev says, "What went right is also what went wrong." Can democracy survive? (Retrieved from https://www.ted.com/talks/ivan_krastev_can_democracy_exist_without_trust)
  • Tuesday October 8, 5:00-7:00 PM: Taco Tuesday at Beacon. Join us for food and fellowship.

 Chalice Circles
Fourth Tuesday & Sunday of the month

Touchstones Chalice Circles are designed to meet our needs for belonging (intimacy) and meaning (ultimacy) by building friendships and providing opportunities to ponder life's questions, small and large, with others who share the common values of our UU Principles.

Chalice Circle continues to meet on the 4th Sunday & Tuesday of each month. Discussion examines subjects as provided in the monthly journal of Unitarian Universalism, Touchstones.

Sunday Circles start on September 29 th  and run through next May.  This month's Sunday meeting moved due to the Town Hall on the 22nd. Please see the calendar.

To meet the needs of the congregation, we have made attendance open.

For further information contact Char Tarashanti or Lynda L. Dorweiler at ChaliceCircles@Beaconuu.com
October  & November Share the Plate Partner

For October and November, Beacon UU is sharing the plate with Flagstaff Family Food Center. Serving around 63,000 daily meals per year in their location on N. Second Street, the Center also provides a children's reading room, delivers to the Flagstaff Shelter Services an evening meal for those who might be staying the night, and provides Back Door and Mobile Sack Lunches. They have a food rescue program from local grocery stores and distribute food no longer good for human consumption to local farms and ranches, so there is zero waste.

Undesignated contributions in this month's offerings above $350 will be presented to the Share The Plate partner. Nominations for 501c3 agencies can be made through a form located at the top of the stairs in the CAC folder, or contact Office@beaconuu.com
Our Caring Connections
