BEAGLE BUGLE - ROCKWELL PTA AND SCHOOL NEWS

LWSD SNOW MAKE-UP DAYS

The district has finalized plans to make up for the days and time missed due to the February snow events. The 2018-19 calendar has been modified to reflect the changes.

As a reminder, school districts can request a waiver from the state for missed school days during the Governor's declared state of emergency. Districts are not allowed to seek a waiver that would impact the required K-12 average instructional hours of 1,027. After analysis of both requirements, it was determined that a total of 3.5 days must be made up to maintain compliance with both requirements. The 2018-19 calendar has May 28 built-in as a snow day, so a total of 2.5 days must be made up beyond the built-in snow day.
The following modifications will be made to the 2018-19 calendar:

  • Wednesday, May 1: change from an early release to a full day for students
  • Wednesday, May 8: change from an early release to a full day for students
  • Friday, May 24: change from a non-school day to a school day for students
  • Tuesday, May 28: change from a non-school day to a school day for students
  • Wednesday, June 19: change from a half day to a full day for students
  • Thursday, June 20: added as a half day for students (last day of school)
These changes were made in consideration of students, families and staff. It should be noted that high school graduation dates and times will not be affected by these changes. Families with preschool students will receive communication from their program about any changes. We appreciate your flexibility as we fulfill the state required hours.

All of these changes have been reflected on the Norman Rockwell PTA online calendar.

AN UPDATE ON FUNDRAISING!

An Update on Fundraising!

In spite of all of our snow in February, we managed to net almost $1000 for our Rockwell kids through our two participation February fundraising activities of Box Tops and our Dining Out for Rockwell.  Many Thanks to everyone that participated!  We know it wasn't easy with all of the snow scheduling issues but the good news is that we still raised a significant amount of money that will directly support enrichment programs and our kids here at Rockwell!

At the end of March we have another participation activity scheduled at Lunchbox Lab in Redmond Town Center on March 28th from 5-10pm.  You will see a flyer coming home soon with your kids.  Of note, 2nd and 3rd Graders have a choir concert scheduled that night so come before or after for dinner, milkshakes and more!  And of course all other grades, please come as well.  Who has time to cook and clean up on a busy school night?  And why not support Rockwell by eating at Lunchbox Lab with 20% of the proceeds coming back to our school.  Be sure to give the flier or tell the cashier as you pay for your meal that night so that they know to channel 20% of your bill back to Rockwell.

And coming in May, look again for School Pool calendars.  This is also an easy way to earn money for Rockwell.  Just turn in your completed calendar by the end of May with your student's name and contact info and the school will get money plus your kids will receive a prize, all from the City of Redmond.  Look for those calendars coming home at the beginning of May.

Thanks again for all of your direct contributions through the Annual Beagle Contribution at the start of the year, through the Read-A-Thon last Fall and now all of our participation fundraising activities that we are finishing our school year on.  Your kids are directly benefiting with PTA funds donated to School Field Trips, Toymaker (a hands on STEM classroom program), STEM night, the School Musical in addition to books and materials requested by Rockwell teachers for their classrooms to just name a few.  For all of you who braved the mini- snow storm last week for the "Spring Coffee", that was also funded with your Rockwell PTA funds.

Thanks again!

K-5 SCIENCE ADOPTION PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT
Wednesday, March 20 7:00-8:00pm
LWSD Board Room

As part of the district adoption process for K-5 Science curriculum, there will be a K-5 Science Adoption Curriculum Materials Informational Parent Night held on March 20 from 7:00-8:00 in the Board Room. The materials are Amplify Science and Building Blocks of Science. The materials are currently being piloted by the K-5 Science Committee and NGSS Learning Cohort teachers across LWSD elementary schools. Parents who have students in piloting classrooms have received information about the curriculum already from their classroom teacher.

This evening will provide parents and the community with information about the process of the adoption committee's work as well as provide an opportunity for those in attendance to preview and provide feedback about the two finalist curriculum materials. We will also directly email all elementary parents with information about the curricula and ask for their input in an online survey.

PARENT'S GUIDE TO SUCCESS

Now that the semester is over, snow make up days announced and a change in the weather, here is your reminder that there are three full months left of school and a lot for students to learn.  PTA will be featuring a grade level every couple of weeks to ensure parents know what each grade level is covering to be prepared for the transition to the next grade, plus a couple of ideas to support learning at home.

KINDERGARTEN

A Sample of What Your Child Will Be Working on in Kindergarten:
  • Naming upper-and lower-case letters, matching those letters  with their sounds, and printing them
  • Comparing the adventures and experiences of characters in familiar stories, such as fairy tales and folktales
  • Retelling familiar stories and talking about stories read to them using details from the text
  • Comparing two groups of objects to tell which group, if either, has more; Comparing two written numbers to tell which is greater
  • Adding with a sum of 10 or less; subtracting from a  number 10 or less; and solving addition and subtraction word problems
  • Adding and subtracting very small numbers quickly and  accurately (e.g., 3 + 1)
At home support:
  • Ask your child to explain his or her favorite parts of the story.
  • Ask your child questions that require comparing numbers.  "Who is wearing more bracelets, you or your sister?" (Your child might use matching or counting to find the answer)

NOTES FROM THE LIBRARY

Hello Beagles,

We have lots of exciting things happening in the Rockwell Library. On Monday, March 4th, we hosted our first annual Dr. Seuss's Birthday Multilingual Read Aloud in celebration of Read Across America Week. Staff and parent volunteers read Dr. Seuss titles in many languages including: Japanese,  Spanish and Chinese.

Also, we are collecting books for our annual Used Book Sale coming up in May. If you would like to donate gently loved books for our sale, feel free to drop them off at the office.

In addition, we will be welcoming a visiting Author-David Lasky, on March 25th. Look for more information coming soon on times for that. Thanks for your support of our Rockwell Library.

REGISTER EARLY FOR KINDERGARTEN
Tell your neighbors & friends

If you live in Lake Washington School District (LWSD) and your child will be five years old on or before August 31, 2019, now is the time to register them for Kindergarten!

Registration takes place at your neighborhood school during regular school hours through the beginning of the 2019-20 school year.

While registration will continue throughout the school year and summer, parents are highly encouraged to register students as soon as possible. Doing so helps ensure class sizes are balanced and adequate staff are hired in time for the new school year.

Visit the  Kindergarten Information webpage  for more information.

SBA TESTING
See dates below

This year's SBA (State Assessments in English Language Arts, Math, and Science) will take place on the following days:

Grade 3 - May 14-16 (ELA) and May 29-30 (Math)
Grade 4 - May 7-9 (ELA) and May 21-22 (Math)
Grade 5 - May 7-9 (ELA), May 21-22 (Math), May 23 (Science)

Please note these dates on your calendars and avoid making appointments or planning family trips on those days.

Also, there is nothing additional you need to do to prepare for these assessments at home, as teachers will guide students in preparations and practice sessions prior to the assessments. The assessments are one way to measure the growth students have made in their studies this academic year.
BALLOT NEWS

Our school district is growing. To meet the needs of the student population, Lake Washington School District will be placing a capital projects levy on the April 23 ballot.
