Awesome volunteer needed to serve as VP of Events!
Do you like  ICE CREAM?  How about  DANCING?  Learning about the  HERITAGE of other Rockwell families?  Being your child's  SUPERHERO

If you said "yes" to any of these questions, please consider a role on the PTA board as  VP of Events for the 2019-2020 school year.   The outgoing board finishes up their duties for the school year at the end of June.

If the role remains vacant, the PTA will have to cancel individual events as they approach until the role is filled.  High-level responsibilities can be found  here (near the bottom of the table in the middle of the page).  For detailed questions, contact our current VP of Events,  Elaine Bentzinger for questions.

Bike to School Day has passed, but SchoolPool continues through the end of the month!

Help our school earn money by walking, biking, carpooling, or riding the bus to school, and logging your trips on the SchoolPool tracker.  Only one day of walking, biking, carpooling or riding the school bus is needed to count towards earning money for our school.

At the end of the month, submit a completed reward coupon with a legible email address for your student to receive a free round of Putt Putt golf at Rainbow Run in Redmond in addition to $5 given to our PTA for each tracker submitted!  This is free money for our kids  and will go directly to school enrichment programs like the STEM Science Fair, Classroom grants for the Toy Maker, School Musical and Science Van.

Parents of fifth graders must be reminded that to enter the sixth grade, they must show proof of one dose of the Tdap vaccine (to help prevent pertussis/whooping cough).

The deadline to turn it in is June 1, 2019, unless your child has a summer birthday. Children with summer birthdays just need to have a completed form on file by the first day of school. If you have any questions, please contact your school nurse.

Calling Parent Volunteers! It's Baaack!!
The Pacific Science Center's excellent "Science On Wheels" school program will be at Rockwell on June  13th & 14th.   This year's program is titled "MathBlast" and we need parent volunteers to facilitate the exhibit area by guiding students through the portable exhibits set up in the library.
If you are able to volunteer for a half day shift (or longer!) please click here.

We appreciate your assistance! In appreciation for your help, you will be given passes for free admission to Pacific Science Center exhibits.
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Whitestone.
**Please remember, as with all Rockwell activities, you must be cleared by the district with a background check and be on the LWSD approved volunteer list to volunteer.
Thank you,

Greetings Rockwell families!   As you may know, Community Serve Day is returning to Norman Rockwell for its third year this year, and is scheduled for August 25, 2019 from 9am-1pm. Be a part of transforming Rockwell in preparation for the new school year!  While all the details will be forthcoming, we are beginning our search for anyone skilled with a camera to volunteer their time to take some photos for us that can be used in digital media after the event.  If this is you and you are interested in volunteering your time (or if you have questions), please contact  Elaine Bentzinger.
Registration is currently open, so register today!  (When you get to the list of schools, be sure to scroll to the LWSD section near the bottom of the page to select Rockwell as your school)

Wondering what your child is currently learning and what they need to know as they transition into the next grade?  PTA will feature one grade level every couple of weeks to ensure parents know and also offer a couple of ideas to support learning at home.

A Sample of What Your Child Will Be Working on in 4th Grade:

  • Comparing ideas/characters/events/settings in stories and myths from different cultures
  • Writing summaries or opinions about topics supported with a set of well-organized facts, details, and examples
  • Paraphrasing and responding to information presented in discussions, such as comparing and contrasting ideas and analyzing evidence that speakers use to support particular points
  • Reporting orally on a topic or telling a story with enough facts and details
  • Relating words that are common in reading to words with similar meanings (synonyms) and to their opposites (antonyms)
  • Multiplying and dividing multi-digit numbers in simple cases (e.g., multiplying 1,638 × 7 or 24 × 17, and dividing 6,966 by 6)
  • Understanding and applying equivalent fractions (e.g., recognizing that one fourth is less than three eighths because two eighths is less than three eighths)
  • Adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions in simple cases, and solving related word problems
  • Understanding simple decimals in terms of fractions
  • Measuring angles and finding unknown angles in a diagram
How to help your child at home:
  • Urge your child to use logical arguments to defend his or her opinion. If your child wants a raise in allowance, ask him or her to research commonsense allowance systems and, based on that research, explain reasons why, supported by facts and details.
  • Talk about the news together. Pick one story in the news, read it together, and discuss with your child what it means.
  • Ask your child to compare numbers using phrases like "times as much." For example, if the family cat weighs 8 lbs. and the family dog weighs 56 lbs., how many times as much does the dog weigh?
  • Ask your child to help you compare fractional amounts - for example, if one recipe calls for two thirds of a cup of oil, but another recipe calls for three fourths of a cup of oil, which recipe calls for more oil?

Please check in the office for watches, earrings, and house keys, as we have several unclaimed items.

Rockwell is a flourishing community of diversity. In order to maintain our inclusive community and assist families with emerging proficiency in English, PTA and Rockwell have established two programs to  facilitate two-way communication.

PTA provides translators through our FACE (Family and Community Engagement) committee at school events, meetings and by translating forms into several languages. You can also select your preferred language on our PTA website by using the "select language" button.

Rockwell utilizes a phone service to eliminate communication barriers- the service offers more than 240 spoken languages and American Sign LanguageStop by the office to find out more or use the service for meetings, registration or any other need.

Tell your neighbors & friends

If you live in Lake Washington School District (LWSD) and your child will be five years old on or before August 31, 2019, now is the time to register them for Kindergarten!

Registration takes place at your neighborhood school during regular school hours through the beginning of the 2019-20 school year.

While registration will continue throughout the school year and summer, parents are highly encouraged to register students as soon as possible. Doing so helps ensure class sizes are balanced and adequate staff are hired in time for the new school year.

Visit the  Kindergarten Information webpage  for more information.
