Chess4Life is coming to Rockwell again this Fall and we're still looking for a chairperson to help with coordinating this after school class. If your kids love chess and you plan to sign them up for chess, please consider to chair the club to ensure that the program will not be cancelled due to lack of chairperson. Our former chess chair is available to answer all questions and to provide all needed information. You only need to contact us at We thank you! And your kids will thank you too!

Thanks so much to all those of you that have given for this year's Annual Beagle Contribution.  We really appreciate your generous support!
As of today, we have hit the funding deadline for our big push for the ABC.  Unfortunately, we fell short of our fundraising goal this year, which means programs will be cut to keep our budget in balance.

As a result, we will have to CUT the Science Van, STEM Night, and the Spring Musical.
The budget will be presented at the General Membership Meeting on October 10 (please join us), so any contributions that come in before that day will be calculated into the budget planning.  If you wish to give before that date, the time to act is   NOW

Once you have donated to the ABC, please also remember to submit  a request here through your employer to have your contribution matched.  This is "free" money to support programs for our kids.
This is "free" money to support programs for our kids.
Please note that we accept donations throughout the school year, but our budget is based off what is received by the funding deadline.
Thank you!

Elaine Bentzinger

Please send your child to school with their comfort kits as soon as possible!

The information (plus a quart sized zip-lock bag) was attached to the first day packet at Dog Day. If you misplaced the packet, you can use your own quart sized bag and find the instructions (along with more information) on our website here.

We are asking for each child to have a comfort kit in their classroom in case there is an extended emergency situation. Teachers will distribute kits to students to keep them calm and reassured until parents are reunited with them.

Thank you for considering your child's emotional wellbeing and se nding in a comfort kit today !

Volunteers Needed!

Our Rockwell vision and Hearing Screening for all students (4th graders will not be screened, as is the case with all school statewide) on October 3.  We could use a few more volunteers to help make the day run smoothly.  Expect to work from the start of school through noon or slightly beyond.  Training provided that morning. It's easy, really!  You will definitely see your child while volunteering.

Add yourself to the volunteer list on the PTA webpage or email me directly.

Math Challenge is back for this school year! For those who are new to the program, Math Challenge is a PTA sponsored program that is offered free to all students at Rockwell.

There are 15 challenges total for the school year and each challenge contains math problems that are appropriate for each grade level.  This program is optional and our aim is to encourage students to enjoy learning and working on math. It is a great family activity, as we encourage the students to work with each other, or family to discuss and solve the questions.  Please feel free to try more questions than the minimum required for your grade level in order to qualify.

Once the student completes the challenge, simply hand in the MC to their teacher or the office by the due date, and we will randomly select 12 students to receive a prize for each Math Challenge as an encouragement for their work.

Our first Math Challenge is now available. You can access the challenge here.   The due date for Math Challenge #1 is Thursday, Oct. 3rd by 3:20pm.

Please contact us if you have any question or if you need additional information about this program.

Let the challenge begin!

What an awesome opening week of Running Club! Despite the threat of rain the weather held up, the sun appeared and warmed up over 275 participants each day!

We're still looking for volunteers for this popular program. If you are a stay at home parent and interested in assisting our students,  please click here to sign up!

Any questions, please contact Christine Cottom, Rockwell P.E. Specialist.

The Redmond SchoolPool program encourages students and their families to "Walk and Roll" when traveling to their neighborhood school in October!

Redmond SchoolPool is excited to partner with Norman Rockwell, encouraging students to walk, bike, carpool, or ride the school bus to get to school October 1-31st. To learn more about City of Redmond's SchoolPool program, click here .

How does it work?
1. Each student will receive a calendar to bring home today. Your student should keep the calendar until October 31.
2. Every day that your student walks, bikes, carpools (with another student) or rides the bus to school (at least 1 time), mark the calendar.
3. Parents should complete the back of the calendar with contact information so they can receive rewards for their students.

4 . Please turn calendars in to the main office by Friday, November 1st.

5.  Each returned, completed card earns the PTA $5, up to $1,500 for the school!  (This is free money for our school enrichment programs!)

Thank you for contributing to the success of Redmond SchoolPool. Together we will reduce traffic congestion, raise money for your school, and promote healthy habits.

Hello Rockwell families and community members!

Is your family looking for a fun gardening project? Do you want to help keep Rockwell looking amazing?

Every year for Community Serve Day, our wonderful volunteers spruce up all of our planter boxes including minor repairs plus fresh soil and flowers just before school starts. We need your help in maintaining them and keeping them looking fresh, so we're looking for families to "adopt" a Beagle Box.  Commitment is roughly 3 months.

Responsibilities include:
  • Light trimming weeding, and pruning of existing foliage
  • Watering
  • Replacing soil (minimal) and flowers as needed (small budget is provided)
  • Anything else that strikes your fancy!
This could be a very satisfying way for your whole family to get their hands dirty:)

Sounds fun, right? If interested, please contact Elaine Bentzinger

The school has an ongoing need for help during lunch time (serving students and clean up). The time commitment is from 11:40 to 1pm.

If you are willing and able to help, please click here to pick a time slot (or several).

Thank you in advance!

October is both Disability Awareness Month and Bullying Prevention Month. At Rockwell, we will be promoting these themes by continuing our work with students on inclusion and empathy. Our approach is a positive one, teaching students the behaviors we want them to exhibit instead of just focusing on behaviors we want to extinguish. Teachers often use a technique in their classrooms called "narrating the positive" which means pointing out what others are doing well instead of misbehavior.  In this month's Home School Connection newsletter, you will find an article about how to use this strategy at home to promote desired behavior.
Other good reads in this month's newsletter include:
  • Information about how making mistakes are actually good for our children; mistakes help them grow and learn.
  • Suggestions for setting up a successful homework routine at home.
  • Tip for how to get more included with your child's education by partnering with the classroom teacher.
You can find these articles and more in October's newsletter  here.
Take care,

Thank you so much for all the pants/shorts/leggings you donated to the health room.

T hey were put to good use immediately!!

Hello, Rockwell Families!

If you haven't already, please send in your PTA membership forms online or by paper form/kid mail.  PTA membership is required to participate in many PTA activities from being a room parent to chaperoning after school enrichment activities.  Only PTA members can handle money in volunteer activities that collect money like the ice cream social or musical concessions .

For some families, if money is an issue, our PTA has many scholarships available for membership.  Please contact the school counselor to utilize these funds.
